So this is a question for a friend (not me bc I didnt apply to nyu and plus I have no shot).... To attend NYU's interview or not??

My friend has received interviews from many other places and is still going to school, and is trying to cut back on some of the interivews bc it is a lot of travelling and time with school....so he wasnt sure about NYU...isit worth it? Anyone out there with opinions about NYU? We would appreciate it!!! 🙂

If he doesn't have an acceptance (which he shouldn't in mid-September), he has to go. Did he apply to the other NYC schools? If so, call them up and hint he'll be in the area. Getting into and staying in NYC is expensive, but if it's for multiple schools....

I think Columbia he applied to as well, but thats probly a long shot

If no acceptances in places he'd rather go then he should go to the interview. If you don't go to an interview at a school without having any other acceptances what was the point of applying to that school in the first place?

I think he has like 7 interviews so far...and I think he did not expect to get all of these...so he was just applying broadly.

I'd call them anyway.

I don't think we can hammer in how important going to all your interviews is until you're 100% sure you have somewhere to be next year.

Another option is if he's waiting for decisions on Oct 15th, he can just schedule the NYU one for late October, and if one of the schools pulls through he can cancel the interview (.....and hopefully have it be transferred to ME! also one of my top choices 😀 )

well why is it a top choice for you guys?

Ive been reading online about it, and I will probably recommend that he goes to the interview....he's just trying to prioritize his schools as its a lot of effort to miss classes and travel, but like you said he doesnt have anything in his hands yet and you never know how many of those interviews will translate into acceptances.

Well I've heard people talk about location, p/f curriculum, apparent balance between research/clinical focus, relatively young student body, and last but not least bellevue hospital. I have other, more personal reasons though.

I think you don't see much genuine enthusiasm for NYU on SDN because it seems like there's a lot who apply to it as a mid-tier "backup" and only attend when their top 20s fall through. 👎 Also people get confused and think that MSSM@NYU = NYUSOM.

TBH, I think by far the biggest reason people are excited about NYU is the location. If it was in Albany, I doubt people would be so excited about it. That said, it's a good school with a nice location; the dorms leave quite a bit to be desired, though.

Okay let's say he doesn't go and also gets no other acceptances, then what? Tell him to go.

I think your friend should def go on the interview. That said, dorms = 👎. But I'll also be nearly 27 when i matriculate and dorms and shared bathrooms just isnt my thing. Of course, I'd deal if i had to.

stixx-- what schools require pubs? Never heard that (at least not officially), except maybe for MD/PhD...

Stanford more or less does... they even have a question on their secondary about it.

Basically if he wants to attend NYU, go to the interview, if not, then don't. I canceled interviews and didn't go to them prior to having acceptances. Just depends what you want. I didn't feel like spending hundreds of dollars on an interview to a school I only applied to as a backup.

Aha. But if it were Albany, they wouldn't have so many rich undergrads, who wouldn't donate that much money to their faculties of choice, which then wouldn't be able to fund such nice facilities. Circle of life. 😀

Okay, I'll admit it. If I got into NYU, I wouldn't have to stay in the dorms. I'd still be sharing an extremely tiny apartment, but better than dorms.

Nice facilities? What are you comparing it to? If it's any NYC school other than AE then clearly you haven't visited NYUSOM haha

I was kind of being tongue-in-cheek. Because it DOES make you wonder where all their money is going.

And whoever was asking earlier about pubs, yea it was Stanford. There were also a few others I applied to anyway that are rumored to be nearly as strict, but I like to pretend I'm 'special' enough for them to not care 😀 Read: I applied so I can frame their rejection letters.

You wonder the same about Tufts and USC... it's weird. I know that we're spoiled at UW by having low tuition but probably the best facilities in the country, though.

Well since NYU owns the majority of new york there's a chunk of change right there..

NYU does not have rolling admissions so tell him to schedule late (nov-dec) and he can cancel when his first acceptance comes in.

Tufts has a terrible contract for their rent. They had a chance to buy some buildings for their campuses many years ago at a great price, didn't, and now they are (along with their students) paying the price.
