Hey guys,

I got into NYU on Dec.1 and paid the initial deposit, and now I have gotten into BU and they have given me till Feb. 16th to pay their larger deposit. I had an interview at UOP on Jan. 30th and really want to go there because from what I've heard it is a much better program, only 3 years, and I am from California. From what I have heard from dentists and other people is that NYU isn't the best place to go and that BU is better, but from what I've read on here is that BU seems to be a very unorganized program. All schools are about the same in cost with NYU being a bit more. anyways my point is, do you think I just not pay BU and hope for UOP with NYU as my back up, or pay BU and have them as my backup to UOP? obviously I have and will be putting a lot of thought into this, just wondering what others may do in my situation.

Go NYU and hope UOP opens up is what I would do.

If it was me, I wouldnt pay the BU deposit. Its a crappy school and it doesnt hold a candle to NYU. Since you've already paid NYU and you just need to think about it vs. UOP (once you hear back) I say just stick with NYU for now and forget about donating your precious $$$ to BU. NYC is also a much cooler city than Boston 😛

I'm with wired on this.

From what I heard, NYU wasn't that great a few years ago but the school cleaned up its act. BU on the other hand, not so much. I didn't interview at BU but I would choose NYU over BU in a heartbeat even if it means paying more for school. On a tangent, I deposited at NYU too and I thought the fee was crazy. How much is BU's deposit?!?!

Good luck with UOP.

I never applied to BU, but I think staying with NYU is the way to go. As mentioned, NYU seems to be heading in the right direction, while that's not what I hear about BU. Then again, that's all rumor on SDN, so it should be taken with a grain of salt. If the prices are very similar, then it really depends on what school felt better to you between the two. Best of luck with your decision.

NYU is probably the better program. Moreover, going there ensures you don't have to pay another deposit. Wait it out for Pacific.

When did you interview @ UOP?

I know a few students at BU and they all told me that the curriculum is very student-friendly and they did not have trouble finding patients.

is that because you were accepted to BU? Because i keep hearing the opposite. 😉

Thanks for the replies guys!

My interview at UOP was on January 30th, a week ago. They said they will let us know in about 2-3 weeks, but they could just put me on waitlist, which I feel they will.

When I went to BU, I did like how it wasnt as cramped and busy as NYU was. But I have been hearing that they have trouble getting patients, however during the interview day, the BU students said that they had no problems getting any. My cousin, who is an orthodontist, has been telling me strongly that I should go to BU over NYU but she went to dental school like 10 years ago and apparently NYU has become quite a bit better since then. I just gotta really hope UOP gives me a definitive answer in a week...

yeah but if you're hearing that from sdn, then it probably doesnt mean much...just saying

well i have friends there too and they say the opposite so who do u believe? the potential positive or the really bad negative? im a pessimist when it comes to rationalizations and people making up stuff to sound like their school is da bomb!

Maybe I'm a pessimist too but I would believe the dental students who give you scary stories about their schools over the students who make their schools look like the Hogwarts of dentistry. It seems odd for students to diss their schools to that extent unless they have serious problems with that school.

its not odd; some people are realists and others are rationalizers. I'm down with the crowd thats willing to tell me the worst about the school so I can make the right assessment about the school.

Don't go with any hearsay. Both numerically and anecdotally speaking, NYU has some of the most patients for any dental school in the nation. I mean, you saw how busy it was...

Well, I took the offer after I asked 5 people who go/went to BU 🙂

But wasn't that the only school that accepted you? therefore no other choice?

When I interviwed at BU, the student reps told us they regretted not choosing a cheaper school.... just ask Mowgli, he was there too.

I withdrew my app from other schools once I heard back from BU on Dec 1st.
So stop hijacking this thread with unnecessary questions.
