Hey guys,

I'm from NYC and I'm torn between U of Buffalo and NYU.

U of Buff
Pros:
Big factor: Cheap, won't be in a lot of debt and half the price of NYU
-Amazing institution
-Low rent
-successful with first choice residency programs

Cons:
-Cold af !!! Snow!!
-8 hrs away from NYC by car
Big factor: I feel like i'd be depressed over there. I'm from NYC so i want action! It felt so boring there when I went for my interview. I don't want to leave my family and friends. NYU has been a dream but class size and expense is the only turn off.

NYU
Pros:
-Great clinical experience
-Facilities
Big factor: NYC, close to fam and friends. I want to live and work in NYC for the rest of my life. I don't want to leave NYC

Cons:
-EXPENSIVE
-Double the price of Buff
-large class size

Idk. I don't want to leave nyc. I just don't want to make the financial mistake and regret it. My heart wants NYU but my brain tells me Buff. Would I regret it if I went to NYU?

Oh you want to go to the one of the most expensive dental school in the nation as well as work in one of the the most saturated areas in the nation? 10/10 would succeed.
If someone told me they would give me 200k and all I had to do is live in buffalo for 4 years I would take it and do it in a heartbeat.

Yeah, but you ignored his concerns. He said he'll be bored for 4 or more years if he's in buffalo. Shouldn't that also be a factor? Like all he's going to do is go to class, maybe hang out with few friends, and then spend his time bored out of his mind with nothing to do.

Shouldn't he also take happiness into question? Also, he will be close to family.

Working 6-7 days a week to pay off tuition as opposed to 4 will also be boring, fyi.

NYU has a cost of attendance of over half a million dollars over the course of 4 years. And that's not even including interest. Average associate makes ~$130k a year before taxes. How do you possibly expect to pay off that amount of interest-accruing debt in a semi-reasonable timeframe? New York is also incredibly expensive by itself.

I think if you choose NYU you'll likely regret it for the rest of your life. Move to New York after graduating from Buffalo. Besides, you're unlikely to be bored as dental school will be taking up plenty of your time.

Why did you even apply to buffalo if you don't want to go there? You are going to be busy during your four years wherever you are so I'd rather be in Buffalo and save myself $200,000.

Forgot to mention to you, incase you were not aware, if you plan on staying in NY you are REQUIRED to do additional training, so for these guys here talking about accruing interest, you can expect it to grow while you spend a 5th year in a capacity that is not as an associate making 500 dollars a day. This is obviously your own choice, but weigh your entire future carefully because once you sign on the dotted line it is final.

What year are you in dental school?

Okay just checked you haven’t even started yet. Figures. Let’s see how much “extra” time you have when you start.

Aren't you the one who said Stony Brook isn't hard, and in most nights you sleep at 11PM, and sometimes 10PM?

Would you like to live and practice in NYC after you're done with dental school + residency? If so, you have to save money on tuition and this means going to buffalo. Listen dentistry is a decent gig but it's not the best career choice if you want to live in a saturated suburb or big city. In order to make the life you envision
comfortable, lower the threshold of expenses you have to cover each month. Some ppl are extremely capable and have the greatest time management skills. Those ppl will have some time in dental school to be bored. The vast majority of us are average-ish and for us there really isn't all that much free time. With the money you save you can fly back home and make it rain several times each semester if you're really hell bent on blowing money.

Is money everything though? To me, money isn't everything. Life is freakin short man. I want to be happy. Are any of you from NYC? When you were born in raised in the best city in the world, you can't just pick up and leave to a city like buffalo. You become unimpressed to a city like that. When I was there, I was like "Where tf am i? I hate this place."
Also, you work through D2 D3 and D4 all year round and get like a 2 week break. I spoke to a recent grad from NYU who opened up his own office and he said that yes loans are a problem, but it doesn't affect his quality of life. he began networking while he was in dental school. He lived in NYC his whole life and when he felt like things were getting tough, he took the subway back home and reset for two nights and came back refreshed. Idk. Idk why I even made this post when I'm like 85% NYU 15% Buffalo lmaoooooo. I understand the economical consequences, but I know myself and I know I won't be happy up there. I don't want to leave what I have down here. I have a gf, an extensive family, and this is my home.

I'd like to ask again, is money everything? I don't think that $200k is worth my happiness for four whole years. I just made this post to see if anybody can convince me on a fact other than money, and so far I haven't seen that.

200k is the down payment to $1M loan lol. Good luck with your choice man!

I think you made your mind to NYU, please go to NYU and drop your spot to another applicant who needs it.
Yes, I agree with you that money is not everything, but sometimes you have to make a sacrifice in your life to achieve a better future.

Go to buff and give me the 200k lol. I'll send you my paypal.

I was raised in NYC and not infatuated with it like you. If you want to go to NYU go no one is stopping you. Decline the Buffalo acceptance and call it a day.

And for the record I’m glad I get to not use the stinking MTA subways any more and get some fresh air for a couple of years.

You choose what your heart tells you. SDN is always gonna be anti-NYU lol.. Always and forever, but it's your life and your choice, you are the one who is gonna live with that choice, not them.

If you don't choose NYU, I would be happy to swap places, but I feel they will never even consider me lol..

and by the way, not all people want to live in a mansion isolated from others, some of us are just happy living in a studio surrounded by many people, that's our thing and that's what makes us happy..

That's objectively the worst interpretation of what we have been trying to convey here.

I'm not anti NYU I'm anti over priced private schools. If OP had said USC vs UCSF and really wanted to live in Los Angeles I'd say (s)he was making a mistake.

I don't think it's that we're anti-NYU specifically, or that we're against living frugally, it's just that the decision doesn't make sense in the slightest. Sure, New York is his home but I don't think people realize how much money $500k is, especially when it's rapidly gaining interest and you want to continue living in one of the world's most expensive cities. Is living in NY really worth over a million dollars? Dentists do well but not that well, especially in congested urban areas. I mean I'm getting nervous wondering how I'm gonna pay for dental school at a place that costs half that.

I did not mean this thread specifically, but I have been around this forum for 2 years and people here are against NYU even though Columbia is just a tad cheaper. Actually, there is a thread specifically saying don't go to NYU made by an accountant and a financial advisor.

You should not worry so much about the future; life is too short and people die every day for stupid reasons or lose everything they have.

It is not worth the worry, we only live once, and if we are lucky to get accepted at a school in a great location, we should take that chance.

Some will say he can always live in NYC when you are older.

He is already older, he is not a kid anymore.

When he graduates, he'll probably want to marry and settle down.
Then NYC is not gonna be the best fit for someone who wants to settle down, maybe just the first 2-5 years then when he'll have kids.

He'll move to the suburbs maybe Staten Island or upstate New York or VA or Florida and that's that.

His life then revolves about his patients and his kids.

The end!

Of course, he could get divorced and lose half of his money.

But hey, it was worth it, he saved money going to the north pole and enjoying the isolated life that Buffalo has to offer.

If I am gonna anticipate a rather gloomy outcome which could be right or wrong( unlikely I am always right! :woot:):

If he moved to Buffalo, his distant relationship with his gf will wean until they break up, he'll be depressed, he'll eat a lot and gain weight or might not eat at all and lose a lot of weight, and he won't get to see his family or friends so no emotional support! He will start skipping classes, and he will start doing poorly in classes. You can't thrive in a place you don't like. You just can't & seriously you can't put a price on education.

If you all worry about the price, most schools outside of the US are way cheaper, I am not sure, but I think U.S schools have to be the most expensive schools in the world.

I didn't interpret anyone here, I was just talking in general. I was also trying to explain to people who don't get it that not all of us have the same needs and requirements to be happy or content.

Your message is clear and simple, always choose the cheapest school, but life is not that simple.

This pretty much sums it up. Don't go to a place where you'll be miserable and isolated. Money shouldn't be the only factor you consider. This is a very important time of his life, from like 22-28.

^ This

People keep talking about saving $X over the 4 years but they don't take into consideration actually surviving the 4 years.

Being "miserable" or even "slightly miserable" for the course of those 4 years means you won't even get to see your degree. So what does that money saved even mean?

I'd rather come out with $500k+ debt and pay it off as a dentist than choose a school that I'm miserable at and perhaps drop 1st year, or even contemplate changing careers down the road.

Jokes on you, I'm miserable everywhere!

We think alike. I feel like 90% of people on SDN put money over happiness and im not about it. Im living now and I could die tomorrow like you said. People think that you are going to breeze through those four years without anything life-changing happening during it. As if its a small chapter in your life.
