Hello SDN,

I'm an international student who's having a lot of trouble deciding between NYU, Buffalo, and BU. In my situation, the total expenses at Buffalo is estimated to about 100k cheaper than NYU and 50k cheaper than BU. Cost is extremely important, but location, school reputation, and residency placements are also important factors. I know NYU has the best facilities but I'm not sure if the extra 100k is worth the value.

For those who are attending BU, NYU, or Buffalo and had similar situation when deciding where to attend, could you please shed some light as to how you made your decision? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Buffalo. Makes no sense to pay an extra 100k to go to nyu or 50k to go to bu.
Buffalo is known as a great school but location isn't great. It'll be freezing.

Buffalo>bu>nyu

100k extra in debt is just too much to overlook!

There have been several threads comparing nearly the same schools, read up...the answers are always the same and you may want to brush up on school reputations a bit

Thanks for the feedback. I'm new to this site and still learning the ways to get around this forum.

Does anyone know if Buffalo's deposit is refundable?

Buffalo all the way. Amazing school, friendly class body (from what I can tell and have heard) and its relatively cheap. Their clinical training is, also, amazing, every 3rd and 4th year student gets their own chair, its like having your own set of private practice inside the school. The school gets about 30,000 patients per year, thats a lot of patients.

Where does it cost the most to live? Is it also NYU?

Buffalo's cost of living is in all honesty 1/3 of New York City and 1/2 of Boston's. Yea, you have to put up with more snow, but you also have a city that can deal with the snow. All 3 places have it's drawbacks as far as quality of life, but I can tell you that most people move to Buffalo very pessimistic and end up being quite surprised with what the area has to offer....

Obviously buffalo.. I don't understand how anyone would need to ask this question

So what's life in Buffalo like? And where can I find information about their residency placements?

You can go anywhere and get placed in any residency program you like, depending on academic and clinical performance, as well as board scores. Why not save some money, work hard, and dominate Dental School in Buffalo...it makes the most sense...I really don't see why BU and NYU are even in the discussion since you'll be paying double or more to go to either of them...but that's just my economical self...

At the end of the day you have to live in one of these places for 4 years so its really up to you to decide whether you'll be okay freezing in Buffalo for 4 yrs, living in NYC (yes with crazy tuition) or in Boston...every place has its pros and cons and since you said cost was your biggest one...you need to go to Buffalo because the other places will cost you a lot more..

Hiii
congrats on your acceptances! I have my Buffalo interview in January and I am very confused 🙁 do you mind telling me about your writing topic?? and how was the discussion ??

I would go middle of the road and choose BU. Buffalo's location is quite depressing and I would never want to spend 4 years there even if I did save the money. The weather is treacherous and it's a disgusting and very boring hick of a city. And that's an understatement!

NYU and way overpriced but soooo tempting because of location and facility.

BU is still pricey but not as bad and I love Boston. I would pay a little extra to not live in Buffalo for my sanity

I would go in the middle for this one for sure!!

Good luck on your tough decision. I hope to be facing a similar predicament. UCSF or state school!. I just love Cali🙂

I disagree with you completely on everything you said about Buffalo. Have you spent any time there more than your interview (if you even had one there)? Making these crazy statements about Buffalo because you love Boston is ridiculous.

I'll back her up on this one, in my opinion Buffalo sucks. Yes I have spent a ton of time there (a lot of family there, best friends live there, etc.) and it's an awful city. Weather sucks, it's really run down, and its basically a college city with bad sports. Obviously this is my opinion, but for what it's worth I'm giving up my buffalo acceptance for NYU. Go to BU or NYU haha it's way more expensive but I'd rather not hate where I am for 4 years. But if money is really important to you, go there and suck it up haha. Good luck!

Well, you have to make yourself believe you love Buffalo because your attending it and also you can't possibly talk smack about your own school. I completely agree with everything keb2011 and Noelle23 said above. I would take BU/NYU over Buffalo any day.

Interesting. I could justify a $50k difference over 4 years to myself, but a $100k or more difference is more than I can justify for any reason. Especially considering interest.

Actually smarty pants, I have lived there for 15 years!! And no I didn't interview there because I thought about applying there for maybe a nanosecond and even the incentive of having my entire family there couldn't even convince me to apply.

I couldn't fathom living there again. I have never once heard anyone say they absolutely love Buffalo. To be honest Boston wouldn't be my first choice either. I love the West coast. I was just trying to help the OP. Geese! You must be a Die Hard Bills Fan😍

As far as I know, Buffalo isn't much colder than NYC or Boston. It gets more snow but the average daily highs during the winter are comparable.

According to Weather.com, the average high in January is 31 for Buffalo and 36 for both NYC and Boston. Compare that to 16 for Fargo and 66 out here in San Diego and your choices are very similar.

It doesn't seem like cold weather would make much of a difference between the schools you're looking at.

Boston and NYC have much more to do but aren't you planning on spending those 4 years inside a dental school building or in the library? Your only break during the summer will be at a time when Buffalo is warm.

I'm choosing Buffalo based on cost and proximity to family - more important to me than facilities or weather (I withdrew from Midwestern AZ which is the best in those categories).

I agree with rickbhill. Also, from what I have heard/seen the clinical component at Buffalo is much better than NYU and BU. Haha the student to faculty ratio is a joke at NYU and I am sure it is a similar case at BU. Also, you get your own chair at Buffalo which makes it seem like your own little private practice 3rd and 4th year. Trust me, you're not going to be exploring the city often with the amount of work you'll have so location is pretty irrelevant due to this and the staggering cost difference is definitely not worth it. Plus I have talked to a couple of dentists from NYU who said to go to Buffalo hands down and save as much money as possible. Ultimately it comes down to if you can see yourself at a particular school for the next 4 yrs without too many problems. If you can sacrifice certain things (location) then it's definitely the right idea to attend Buffalo. Hope this helps!

LOL, nope, Indy fan...since '94 (I am not a bandwagon-er)... I just feel like you're completely bashing the city because you've lived there for so long. For someone who is only spending 4 years of their life there, saving that much money and getting an amazing dental education outweighs how sucky one may think the city is... Maybe you just need a change! I bet you end up coming back to be near family and because you do actually love Buffalo.....just sayin' 😉
