Shouldn't personal considerations be the most important factor? Which place did you like best when you interviewed?

Although I have to take the opportunity to plug Portland as an amazing city.

Yes they matter, it's just I have seen how most of these polls turn into a lecture for the creator to explore his or her feelings, which I already know how to do. What I need help with are these 4 schools, and which ones are stronger medical programs. I am from the west coast and interested in surgery/specializing potentially, if that helps.

I voted Gtown, mostly because it is the only one I am familiar with and also because no one else had voted for it.

What struck me most about Gtown was how they seemed to emphasize that they had a lot of success matching into competitive surgical residencies, especially for a non-top tier med school. Not sure how accurate that is, but surgery seemed to be one of their major claims to fame, and you mentioned an interest in surgery. It is very expensive though.

But, your best bet is probably Oregon, especially if you want to stay in the west. I am from the west as well, and I know attending your state school (is it your state school? State schools are good. OOS at another state school=$$$$$$$$$$) is perfectly adequate and most doctors in the state are from the state med school. However, if you are interested in living out east, going east may make more sense. Oregon is a strong program, so I'm sure you could get around it. But, there always is a bit of east coast bias.

OHSU is great, but they focus more on primary care from what I hear. I doubt you'd be at any disadvantage trying to go into surgery though. I would pick NYU because it's in Manhattan and has a great reputation/clinical sites. Rochester is a high quality school, and if they gave a lot of aid I'd have to consider that over another school that didn't give as much. If I had the choice, I would not attend Georgetown.

Rochester is fantastic, the students I know at Rochester are amazing and I really enjoyed the vibe I got there. P/F classes with no ranking is awesome and I think that their way of doing the FP clerkship during the first and second year to open up time for more electives in the 3rd year is really ideal... still giving you the whole two years to deal with the pre-clinical stuff.

Also free coffee in the admissions office for students throughout your time there.

Thanks for voting all, it has been about a month now and I would like to know if anyone could post anything regarding NYU and why there is a majority of people who voted for it over, say, Rochester. Thanks!

Probably because NYU is in a "sexy" location. That said, Rochester is probably the better school.

I was accepted to NYU and URochester last year and I must admit I'm really happy with my decision to attend Rochester. If you're "pre-med" and really serious about medicine, you definitely won't regret it. The opportunities here are boundless and I feel the students here may be competitive but friendly. Moreover, its beautiful! NYU is amazing (not trying to downgrade the school) but i'd recommend it if you're really into Business or something. but most importantly, you should consider the entire financial package. NYU was insanely expensive for me while Rochester was so much better financially. Moreover, the medical school is so close by, so clinical research/ volunteering opportunities are always available! Hope that helps, best of luck!

First off, if your in state go to OHSU unless you get some ridiculous scholarship. None of the other schools are worth the $$$ over OHSU.

Other than that, I'd say

NYU > OHSU=Rochester > Gtown

Interviewed at NYU and wasn't impressed by their pre-clinical years, but Being associated with Bellview is a major plus.

That being said, the schools are similar enough that I would let money and personal desire for location be the deciding factor.

ohsu, followed by rochester.

i've heard gtown has a really stressful environment. nyc is awesome, but i think living there as a poor student is overrated. jmo though. in the end, all awesome choices to have. :luck:

Thanks again for the info. As it turns out, OHSU is the most expensive state medical school in the country, and costs about the same as Rochester (40 g's a year). So price is not so much a factor for me.

I know both ohsu and nyu pretty well, and if their huge and obvious differences can't help you decide, nothing on this forum will.

OHSU (oregon = awesome) > Rochester (good school) > NYU (the city!) > Georgetown (DC?)

Could you possibly share with me what you know about them? Thanks!

What's the tuition and living expenses for these schools? If there is a significant difference, than that is a huge consideration. Otherwise, I would go for NYU, but I'm biased to the location.

"Dude," what if everyone did what you do? You are consistently awful on these forums. Go to bed!

You think I'm the only person who doesn't like:

Harvard v. WashU v. Duke v. blah, blah blah threads?

"Look at me I got into lots of schools, oh no, I just can't decide, so much candy which should i take, oh can i go to them all, please, please, me, me, me, me, mommy, mommy"

It's pathetic. And needy.

This thread is not celebrate me getting into school and having "candy." I am very grateful that I get to go somewhere, thank you for keeping me in check though? As nice as it is to have a decision, a decision must be made and information from others never hurts when making decisions, it even helps on occasion! Honestly, if you really are in medical school, please go do something to better yourself as a future physician rather than puttering around on these forums. It's a waste of your own time. Who is it that's needy?

Thank you everyone else, you have been very helpful.

Go anywhere but OHSU.

That way I will get accepted to OHSU, and I will send you a cookie.
