NYU vs Rutgers

so I'm out of state for rutgers, so id being paying oos tuition, although I've heard u can declare instate after the first year, how hard is this to do, does everyone who tries for it get it? also which school is the better choice, i still have an interview at columbia in January so thats up in the air, but I'm deff gonna put a payment down at one of these schools, i just cant decide which one, based both on cost and which is the better school, nyu or rutgers? and i do want to specialize eventually one day, so yeah , any advice would be much appreciated...

Cost wise Rutgers will be your best bet. Even if you do not get in state tuition, the cost of living in NYC is much higher than Newark, NJ. Both to my knowledge produce capable clinicians and provide an excellent education. I also believe they send similar percentages of their classes to specialties (10% ish).

Also to ghost111 if you're only picking one put down for Rutgers. If you got in-state tuition after a year or two well worth it.

That is only based on past sdn posts and at my NYU interview they told me about 10%-20% end up specializing. So I actually have no solid evidence.

Are they Comparable to each other program wise tho ? And how would you decide if Columbia was thrown in the mix ?

You can look up those stats somewhere I think it's in the Ada book actually and I have the online version , I can look it up now that I think of it

Keep in mind I'm a predent so I'm just basing it off of what I've heard and some logistics.

I would guess NYU being private and larger has more resources and a very good representation of the specialties. The class size would lend itself more to a dental school factory rather than a bit more individualized attention at Rutgers. Aside from that I believe you'd learn good general dentistry at either but keep in mind that NYU has a little bit of a poor repetition to some employers due to lack of preparedness from graduates in the past.

If you put Columbia back in the mix I would drop NYU out of the mix. As it stands I guess finances are comparable but if you were able to get in-state at Rutgers you'd probably help yourself out by going there. If you want the medical school curriculum and if you want to specialize then going to Columbia wouldn't be a bad choice. Right or wrong Columbia would likely be "perceived" better but that doesn't necessary reflect clinical competency and wouldn't be worth the price difference.

Thanks so much , yeah if I get Columbia idk I'll prob go there , but I think for price I'm leaning Rutgers , the only thing is , I like the surroundings so much more at nyu obvi, Newark seemed so dangerous ....

I clearly remember only the top 5% at NYU specialize.

They estimated it to about 5-12 per speciality from a class of 360.

yeah so i looked in the adea book i have, and its not listed, i thought it was, but no 🙁 , I've been trying to find this info somewhere on the web and can't find it, whats the opinion on calling and just asking? does that look bad lol?

im a resident of ny and i live within 20-30 min of the city by train,but if i chose nyu id live near there, not at home, cause i stayed home for college
