NYU vs Temple?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
i've never seen nyu so this is by no means an informed opinion, but i was just at temple. seemed like a good education BUT
1) 9-5 traditional lectures can turn you off if you have the attn span of a gnat (like yours truly)
2) my interviewer ended the interview with the question "so...you really want to come hear? i mean, seriously?" not a great sign.
3) ghetto ghetto ghetto....................

We're not lucky enough to get those 9 AM lectures until 2nd year!

I was pretty impressed with Temple's campus when I went for an interview at Jefferson. It made me really regret not applying to Temple. oh well. other than that, i don't know much about temple.

As for NYU, I felt that the interview was impersonal and that mindset kind of stayed with me the whole day. However, the students seemed happy, it provides an excellent education, and the campus is in the greatest location (near union square, center of young, hip NYC). However, after seeing the dorms, i was turned off. The single rooms were pretty drab, lots of construction going on around the dorms, and co-ed communal bathrooms.

9-5 traditional lectures
There's a lot of talk on the message boards about Temple's integrated system - they don't have the "traditional" 9 to 5 lecture schedule.

I was wondering which schools one would choose and why?
That's tough. They both have really good reps. Temple has the best "name" in Philadelphia other than U. of Pennsylvania and is one of the best places in the country for clinical experience. And NYU is extremely well thought of in NYC.

I think you really can't go wrong with either school. 😉

Except for being more like 8 to 3, how is our lecture schedule not traditional?

I agree with uss.

The "integration" refers to the dedicated effort of the faculty to integrate their course material across courses, so that you are learning, for instance, the histo, anatomy, and embryo of certain systems simultaneously first semester.

Works well lots of times, still needs a bit of fine tuning, but I really enjoy how it gives you all of the angles when it does work.

It is 8am - ~3pm most days, and alot of that is lecture time, though.

Actually - NYU is near Herald Square(34th St) NOT Union Square (14th St)
To be more specific it is in an area called gramercy park
A very nice area of NYC

darkhorse, are u already in at temple? if so congrats!! if you dont mind my asking, did you apply as in state or out of state? thanks!!!

In terms of national reputation and placing its graduates into highly competitive and prestigious residencies NYU is in a class above Temple. NYU-Bellvue residency programs in certain specialties such as Internal Medicine and Dermatology are considered among the most highly regarded in the US.I'm sure that Temple is a fine med school, but you should appreciate what you are passing up in NYU.

For those that look down on it being in the city, they are missing the point that this is the reason that Temple can offer their students exposure to some of the best clinical experiences in the United States...specifically because of the area that they serve. I've been to Temple's campus... it's pretty cool and not scary at all (unless you're someone who has trouble being in "the big city")

NYU is a fanstastic school and they have a great reputation, for sure, but I'd have to agree with the others about Temple's superior clinical training. They're known for this and their reputation is up and coming. Good luck with your decision !

I want an NYU interview. 🙁

I even sent them a letter of intent.

They said they'd re-review my app on Jan 15th.... next Wednesday.

We'll see what happens... 😉

Does anyone know if NYU's grading system is P/F or letter grades? I can't seem to find it anywhere---looked in their viewbooks and the MSAR too!

Students receive P/F the first two years

Thanks, fullofhope!
I like the location and love the clinical facilities, but was turned off by the dorms... Probably the worst dorms I've seen thus far.
Oh well, small sacrifice to make for a great med education, I guess 😉

There is a DSS built into the semester (directed self study).

I just looked at the first three weeks of our schedule. We started on a Thursday, so that will encompass 12 days.

On 5 of those 12 days (almost half), I was done by NOON with lecture !

The other days ended at 3, but the Noon days have been nice. 😉

yah this semester has been a bit forgiving thus far 😉

If I were in your shoes, one of the main questions that I would be asking myself is whether I would rather live in NYC or Philly. Based on city alone, I think that I would choose NYC, but obviously that is a very personal decision.

I think that NYU has a better reputation than Temple, but if you think that living in a large city be a problem, that will be a critical decision.

Good luck. In many ways you can't go wrong.

If you were comparing Columbia to Temple, then I'd say that Columbia has the better reputation.

But Temple has a reputation for having a tough academic medical curriculum with second-to-none hands on experience. Considering Temple's reputation and their unique experience, I'd say that it's on par with NYU.

Therefore, I'd probably select between those two schools based on location to family. In reality, you're going to be busy for the next few years, so the "city perks" really won't matter much; but you will be traveling home for the holidays and breaks. Which city is closer to your friends and family?

I'm wondering if applicants and students in states outside of Pennsylvania and New Jersey know of Temple, if Temple's presence or name notoriety reaches outside of the Tri-state area. I think that NYU is a nationally known name (and I certainly agree that Columbia is the most commanding name in the city). Is Temple? I know it gets a lot of respect in the Philadelphia area, but since that's where I'm from, I'm curious about other perspectives.

speaking about location, you may want to consider cost of living and the affordability/availability of off-campus housing. if you decide to attend nyu, you probably have to stay in their dorms for at least your first 2 years. the rent in philly is cheap. you can have a decent 1 bedroom apartment or even split a townhouse in center city philly for 600/month.

i guess that's what i'm debating about right now... got accepted to jeff, temple, and nyu. right now i'm debating between jeff and nyu.
