NYU vs Tufts vs LLU. HELP!

Hey guys,

I am having trouble deciding where to go. I know that they all have great clinical programs, but which one would better prepare you for private practice? They all cost at least $80,000/year (maybe more b/c of the inflation....). When looking at education+clinical training, where would you guys go? I just want to go to the best clinical school.

NYU: + Nice facilities
+ Good clinical training
+ Name (I think...?)
- HUGE CLASS SIZE! I guess that would be okay as long as I
can finish all of my requirements... Although I have read that they used to kick people out. Not sure if that's still happening.

Tufts: + Good balance between clin & research (Good if you want to specialize)
+ Can't go wrong with Boston
+ Mark was awesome!
- Construction = NOISY!

Loma Linda: + Heard that it's one of the top schools for clinical training, although I heard that about other schools too.
+ Can't go wrong with California
+ Friendly atmosphere and people (i'm Christian so it doesn't bug me out)
- Facilities could be a little nicer and I wish I knew a little bit more about the program. They don't have much info on the website...

That is a dubious claim.

I would kick it at Tufts first, followed by NYU, followed by LLU.

Tufts has one of the largest dental programs (160+ students). Still, significantly lower than NYU. The construction will be done soon. Go where you will be most comfortable.

I like NYU. Do a search of my other posts if you want to read some of my comments on the school -- I've posted some lengthy ones. But I'll reiterate one point here -- NYU does not kick students out. In fact, you're given every opportunity to NOT be kicked out including summer remediation if you fail a class or two.

The class size is awesome. I couldn't imagine going somewhere smaller. We have so many faculty members it's not even funny -- find someone you work well with to get signed off and seek out varying opinions whenever you want. Are you worried about getting enough patients to finish your requirements?? We have something like a quarter million charts... I never understand why people are worried about class size... The cost of living in New York I can understand, but size? I see our size as a positive.

Also, as far as patient population goes you can't beat New York. You'll see things here you'll never see again. It's actually pretty cool.

Anyway, let me know if you have any questions. I can't speak for the other two schools (although I'm from Mass and love Boston).

I was told by former students that ages ago they would be happy to replace you even if you were putting in as much effort as you could. That might just be a horror story, but I wouldn't know. as with any dental now a days....there is no incentive for them to accept students, then kick them to the curb. at tufts, there have been students that were held back a year. but that was only after they messed up bad enough to not be able to remediate over the summer. so in that aspect, being held back a year is already giving you 2 strikes (1st one being remediation). so messing up AFTER you have been held back would have been your "3rd strike." and my opinion is that if you can't discpline yourself to hack it after that many chances, there is a problem with yourself and definitely not with the school. you have to really not care in order to get kicked out. tufts provides free tutors to those performing way below average and they are really student friendly.

if there is so many questions about being kicked out, why not check out the class composite pictures from each year and count the freshmen, then count the senior/junior/sophomore classes and see if there is a great disparity in the # of students on the roster. you can do this at any school. most of the time the class pictures are posted somewhere near the admissions office.

The production requirements are a way help students learn to manage their time and be aware of the financial aspect of running a practice. And none of the students I know have a problem making the requirement. I don't agree with your statement at all; I can't say anything has seemed to me to be "about the money". Invisalign cert. was sort of commercial like but that wasn't a bad way to spend 12 hours imo.

Yeah. Conspiracy theories abound.

NYUCD's operational reliance on tuition is one of the lowest in the country -- in the last few years it has dropped considerably while expenses have increased... CONSIDERABLY. Someone has to pay for those pretty new clinics and it's NOT the students.

There's also the educational aspect. Run your patient roster like you run a practice. Try to get through a prep, temp, AND final impression in one visit so you don't have to waste precious chair time bringing the patient back for the impression. Makes sense to me that we should learn this stuff... or are you one of those students that thinks dentistry is just about cutting teeth?

nyu doesn't kick people out unless you fail 3+ classes or the remedial exams....don't listen to rumors spread by a few individuals....the clinical experience is really good here; we have a huge patient pool....98% passing rate on boards...a few people scored 99's...i'm pretty happy here, nyc is a great place to live

hey baby gets your ready for private practice.....if they want me to make 20k a year for them no problem I can live with that 😀
