I got accepted to NYU in December and already paid 1500$ deposit.

But i also got an interview invitation from Tufts.

So, im thinking about declining the invitation unless there are good reasons to choose Tufts over NYU.

I know NYU has almost THE BEST facilities and good opportunities but
really expensive tuition and living cost. But i don't really know that much about Tufts.
(Living cost will matter a lot)

what do you think?

I think NYU is overall better.... but if you are from the New England area and want to practice their, Tufts may be a better choice to make connections. Dentists in the NY area speak highly of NYU. NYC is also more diverse than Boston... just a much better city overall.

Both NYC and Boston are great cities. Both are fairly expensive but NYC takes the cake as NYU is in a pretty pricey area.

Both are excellent schools NYU is a bit more pricey and has a larger class size.

I would def interview at Tufts and check it out, the feel you get is very important.

Tufts is a great school and the students I met there are pretty happy to be there. The clinics are slightly older than ones at NYU but the pre-clinicial area (sim lab) is of much better design. I really, REALLY don't like how NYU has to separate its sim labs into 2 sections and how it felt like a factory or assembly line. The clinics at NYU are generally better though (if you get a newly renonvated one). I cant' comment on the patient pool but both are in super densly populated areas so I would expect simliar numbers.

yeah...im from Ohio

has anyone already visited both schools and have strong opinion about this?

what is the estimate for the tuition and living cost for tufts?

Yea, I went to both.

For me, I hated NYU almost as soon as I got to New York. I had never been there and I just didn't really like the city or the school... I guess I just don't want to be a student in a crowd of 350. I also didn't submit a $1500 deposit to a school I knew I wouldn't be happy at.

When I went to Tufts, I immediately loved Boston. I am from Seattle, though, and there was so much about it that gave me a similar feel. I liked the school more, as well. I think it ultimately comes down to your personality and the things you want in a school. If you have the means to make it to the Tufts interview, I would do it. If not, NYU just might be the school for you.

All i know about NYU is from what ive read on here and it sounds as if they accept just about everyone and then graduate about 10% of the people. If im paying serious bucks for my education im going to want to finish with a degree. NYC is a great city and I hear the school has top notch facilities.

10 percent?? really?? Can i have the source please??

Um, people are right when they say that NYU has the better facilities. I've interviewed at both schools. However, considering the number of students that NYU has, those facilities are SEVERELY overcrowded. Also, note that Tufts just added 5 new floors to their building, meaning that there is even more space now.

As for education, I seriously don't believe that you get a better education or more attention at NYU. It's exactly the opposite due to the large student body and highly commercialized nature of the school. Also, students at Tufts are generally happier, period.

I chose to attend Tufts over NYU (and Penn and Pacific).

It does not hurt to visit Tufts. I personally prefer NYU. I liked the facilities at NYU, and life in the city can be exciting! Anyway, if you get accepted to Tufts and NYU, you will have two great choices.

Thats blatantly wrong. Read anything about NYU from people who go there and people who have interviewed there and you will realize that those rumors are long gone. Maybe ten years ago, but the last two deans have really overhauled the school. If you fail a class you remediate in the summer and if you then fail that you are kicked out. Last year I think 2 people in the whole class were dropped, but from what I hear it was other circumstances like family issues involved not grades.

Jake8 is right. That's I was told in my interview day by Dr. Mejia. You can remediate classes in summer.

Dean Bertolami was former Dean of UCSF and it seems he has made some good changes at NYU. You can ask all these rumors from Dean or Dr. Mejia, and they address all your concerns or questions.

To the OP if you have the means then go to the interview, in the end both are great schools with a great reputation. I will be at NYU but if I felt that I would be happier at another school that accepts me later on then that $1500 deposit would be a spit in the bucket compared to being happier for four years. Also with the tuition and costs associated with NYU you would probably be able to save money going somewhere else even if you lost the deposit. In the end no matter what your choice it best to see all your options rather than have regrets of things not done.

NYUCD has almost 100% student retention rate as of May of 2008. I hope this helps and to the OP I think you should go to the interview for Tufts just to see how you like it but NYUCD is really great in terms of making well rounded dental physicians out of its students. The faculty here at the school is also top notch. Another thing I like about NYUCD is the vast amount of resources and the influence it has on the rest of the dental community. For the past 4-5 years NYUCD has really moved forward and it's always evolving even as we speak. It's an exciting and fast paced school in one of the most intriguing cities in the world. Again if you liked NYUCD, I think you'd love it here.

thanks everyone.
your threads are helping me a lot.

How many positive things are said about NYU? A lot.

do they remediate classes in tufts too?

To make the matters worst, there are some students in every class that are considered super gunners, I dont know what you'd call them, Snipers perhaps? Anyhow, there were sniper incidents during the school year that made the life of students absolutely miserable. What these snipers did, was that they complained to the faculty that exams were "too remedial or too easy". So the faculty made the exams harder. They just don't realize how demanding the coarse load of a dental student is. So if you feel that it is manageable, dont complain. It maybe easy for you, but not the person next to you. This is why I hate it when people on SDN complain of their elite status and not caring for the whole class.

That's just low

which school would you say has better networking for someone who wants to practice in california? (i have not been accepted to any california schools yet, not that i have been accepted to nyu yet either lol but just curious)

if you are going to end up practicing in the west coast then pick the school where you would enjoy living and studying for the next 4 years. both are great schools. after i got accepted to nyu, i got an tufts interview but decided not to attend. i experienced boston and it was nice but i wouldn't want to spend 4 years there.

It's def no NYC, but why? 😀

Getting back to the original question.

Last weekend I tagged along with my dad at the Midwest Society of Periodontology in Chicago. The first lecturer was from Tufts and was very, very impressive and spoke well of his education. I was told that many of the lecturers are often from NYU.

Both are cutting edge schools (maybe both at the top) where the most impressive research is being done. With NYU at #2 most expensive and Tufts at #5, it's not going to be that great of a difference in the long run. What it really comes down to is location. Do you like Boston or New York?

You can rest easy knowing youre going to get a great education at either school.

NYU offers WREB prep and onsite WREB administration if you're interested in heading back to the West Coast.
