These two are the only schools that I got accepted to so far..
I'm not a NJ resident so the cheap tuition wouldn't apply, although UMDNJ OOS will still be a lot cheaper than NYU..
I am leaning towards NYU b/c of the area, name, and more opportunities.. but on the other hand, I can't ignore the cost...

Other than the cost factor, is there anything else that might put UMDNJ above NYU?
Which school do you guys think is a better option? Please help!!

Hey buddy, you get In state tuition after 1 year at UMDNJ (as long as you live in NJ)

So I hope I just made it easier for you. Go to UMDNJ and make it easier on yourself. IN addition I hope you know that nobody cares about the name and NYU does NOT have a better name than UMDNJ because everyone knows at NYU you are simply a number and their program is good (its not great.)

This is a no brainer to me. UMDNJ is only an hour away from the city and its a great school. Good luck. I wish they would call me so I can get an interview there 🙂

Depends. I dont like Newark, not a nice fun city. NYC is much more stimulating in my eyes. And IMO the NYU name helps.

thats a terrible opinion and inaccurate as can be. the name DOES NOT MATTER to anyone (patients dont ever ask or care where you went to school.) plus why would you overpay for the same level of education?

I personally didn't care for NYU, but to each his own. I will say that if your primary reason to favor NYU is being in NYC, it's a pretty bad reason. When you're in dental school you don't get much of a chance to go out no matter where you are, but Newark is literally a 20 minute drive into Manhattan, maybe 45 minutes on the Path. The "city experience" is easily attainable at UMDNJ if you go out on Friday nights.

Most dentists right now don't consider NYU a "good" name because the NYU they know from the 80s is the one that failed half the students and just didn't care about anything other than turning a profit. Patients miiiight like the sound of NYU better than UMDNJ, but I think that in terms of getting an associateship out of school you'd perhaps be better off going to Newark. I don't know, ask your local dentists for a better gauge of what flies in your neck of the woods.

A lot of the dental students I have talked to keep telling me to go to a boring city so I won't be distracted... so maybe Newark would be good! And as Wired said it's not too far from NYC.

Actually it's very close to the city.....hop on a train and you're there.....I live 40 mins west of Newark and it takes me about an hour to get to NYC from here.
I have worked in dentistry for about 20 years and I can count on 1 hand how many times a patient might ask or discuss where the dentist went to school.
Do you care where you're physician went to school?

dont see whats wrong with Newark. its cheap, has some great culture and latino/hispanic areas with great food, has a NHL team, a great MLS team, and is a stones throw from Manhattan.

I honestly don't think you could go wrong with either school. newark isn't pretty but manhattan prices aren't pretty either. I'd go to UMDNJ. New York is close by for your cultural endeavors.
