Hello,

I am super excited that I have been accepted into these schools, but I am having a hard time deciding.

School 1: NYU
OOS
Pros:
  • Brand recognition: When I talk to my non-dental friends and family, they are thrilled to hear that I got into NYU, and they are urging me to go here.
  • NYC location (not sure if this is a pro or con)
  • Patient population (more practice)
  • Connections?
  • Easier to specialize
Cons:
  • Failure rate (not sure how many people fail out)
  • Class Size
  • Cost
  • Administration treating students poorly?
School 2: University of Minnesota
OOS
Pros:
  • Tuition costs less (374K vs 440K NYU)
  • Lower cost of living
  • Class size
  • More of a suburban feel than NYC
Cons:
  • less technologically advanced
  • less known as a university
I am from Michigan, so both schools are equally far. Parents will be paying for cost of living, so the only loans I would need to take are for tuition. There is about a 66K difference in tuition cost, which everyone is telling me is worth it for the NYU brand name and living in NYC. NYC sounds fun in theory, but I would need to sacrifice by getting a smaller room, or insect infestations.

Please let me know what you guys think. I am not sure if either of these schools are P/F or whether it is easier to specialize with one school more than the other. It looks like they both have a very good board exam passing rate.

I'm grateful for any information that can help me decide.

Thanks in advance!

Tuition for NYU is more than $440k. You should consider mandatory insurance, fees, supplies…
And could you please tell me how would that “brand name” for non-dental friends and family help you when it comes to finding jobs and paying the loan back? Because someone who is in the dental field will hire you and they know about NYU! So be wise.
I had a similar situation. I got into waaay better schools and people who didn’t know about the dental field said “oh wow go to NYU”. No thanks.
