Hey guys. I got accepted to UNE dental last week and have until Friday to make my deposit. My deposit is already in at NYU. I'm just wondering what you all would pick and why? I'm having a difficult time deciding because I really liked both schools.

As a side note, tuition is relatively similar and cost of living can be adjusted with roommates. I'm trying to keep finances out of my decision.

All I can say on the matter is that I'm so jelly of the dental facilities on the Portland campus and that Portland is a great city. Good luck in making your decision!

I just commented on your other thread in the pre dental forum, but I'll add some other things in here too. I was accepted into Boston and had my deposit down there, similar to you. Finances aside although you will save a big chunk, I chose UNE because I liked portland much more than the city. The ease of transportation and the atmosphere was somewhere I felt I'd be able to do better in. On top of that I got the feeling that the cirriculum and the teaching philosophy was comprehensive and I'd get a great education. The clinical requirements are competency based and I really liked that. The facilities are all brand new and the class size of 64, which in my opinion is a huge advantage. I hope some of that helped and maybe we will be classmates!

From my own experience, NYUCD (DDS) offers a challenging, stressful, fast-paced, and rewarding dental education. I've hated it and loved it at times, but overall I'm very glad I went there (and even more glad to have graduated...finally!). I'm sure that UNE (DMD?) is a great school, as well, but I don't know much about it. You'll do great in both situations if you have the will (bring it!) and the skills (learn it!) to get through it.

In terms of location, NYC is a great city to live in for 4 years while you're going through dental school. Lots of action and distractions in the city to take your mind of academics and clinic when you need to take a breather. Not nearly as cold as Maine, too. In terms of clinical education, you're going to interact with a very large volume of extremely diverse and medically complex patients at NYU. Sure, it's a big school and it feels like too many people in too small a building at times, but you get used to it and you learn to thrive there. Board passing rates are exceptional, too (class of 2017 just had 100% pass rate on NBDE Part1).

Portland is a great place to live and Maine is a beautiful state (I've visited my wife's family there many times and loved it), but I can't speak to the details of the dental school experience compared with NYU.

Good luck with your decision.

In this case, I would compare clinical exposure. Not sure about UNE and how many patients they see but I'm sure you can find the answers somewhere.

I would go for UNE if I were in your shoes. I've spoke with 2 NYU grads about their experience and it seems that the school is taking on too many students without the resources to comfortably accommodate them.

I was wait-listed and had more interviews but I withdrew from them once I was accepted. Good luck with your decision! Either way you win! 🙂

NYU. But I understand NYU also has a big class size with a high drop out rate.

The best thing for you to do is talk to the students who go to both schools. Personally, I would recommend many schools over NYU. I think their program is just too large. I had the opportunity to go to NYU back in the day and chose another school. I've never regretted it for a moment.

Haha congrats 🙂 I don't think you could have gone wrong either way!

Thank you. It feels like I made the right choice. It'll be fun to experience something different in the city
