Hi everyone,

I got a letter from NYU saying that I was placed on the waiting list, while retaking the DAT. How does it work? What are my chances ? Your input is greatly appreciated !!! Good day and congratulation to all who got accepted into dental school.

I'm almost in the same situation. I called NYU on Tuesday and I was told a letter was sent. After checking the mail today I called Ms. Knowles and she told me a letter was never sent but that my file is still being reviewed by the Admissions Committee. I see your chances as very good. Someone else on this board is in the same position as you, NYU is waiting for the student to retake the DAT. You know exactly what you need to get in, a higher score than what you presently have. It may be hard but at least you know what you're dealing with in terms of how the DAT is.

Good luck.

I can totally relate to both of you. i had my interview yesterday (Dec 12) and they asked me to retake the DAT and in the meanwhile my application would be on hold. the interview itself went very well, but i have border line DAT scores.
i sopke to Amy after lunch and she said i am given the option to strengten my application. should i retake the DAT? i really dont feel like putting myself in that position again......

what are you guys doing???

hi guys..Thank you for your replies.

So does it mean that they will hold a spot for you until you have your score in ? I just don't want to go through the process of studying for DAT again w/o certain promises...

Futuredds,

No, they are not holding a "spot" for you anywhere.. you and i are on the waitlist, which is no where!!! if you do better and still they have an open spot or something opens up, then you are in; otherwise... you are out!!!

goodluck on your DAT

Comet

I was wondering what is you DAT that NYU is asking you to retake it. I know people have got in with low DAT.

Comet
I don't think they put you on the waitlist. I think they are waiting for you to retake your DATs. If you do better this time, they will probably accept you and give you a seat in the class.
Unless they specifically said you are on the waitlist than there's no reason to think you don't have a seat in the class yet. Thus, your file is on HOLD rather than waitlisted. Did that make sense?
I am also retaking my DATs to improve my chances at NYU. I have a 17/14 DAT score

GChem- 16
Bio-16
Ochem - 20
Reading - 20
Math- 13
PAT- 14

I really do not want to retake the test, but I really do want to get into dental school this year. So if you are given the chance to improve your application, take it!

Hi Beagle,

Your information is very useful...Have you talked to any NYU admission persons to clarify on this situation ? I was told that I am on the waited list and also must retake the DAT. When do you plan to take the DAT ? Do we have a deadline ? Please advise. Thanks.

Hey FutureDDS
I am retaking my DATS in mid-late January. I talked to Amy Knowles and she was the one who told me to retake it. She did not say I had to take it over, but that it was in my best interest. She also said an 18 is what they are looking for. I specifically asked her after the interview when I should hear from NYU. At that point, she asked if I wanted my file to be on hold so I could improve my application. I think that if I did not ask her, my file would have been sent in for review and I would have been waitlisted.
There is no deadline for us to retake the DATS. Just sometime from now until April. You have a lot of time to study!
May I ask what you got the first time on the test?
Who did you interview with?

Beagle,

I had Amy Knowles for my interview. My DAT was low on the PAT section, 14.

With all due respect to all the applicants but I'm getting the feeling that Ms. Knowles purposely interviews those applicants she feels have a shot if they only retake the DATs. Is this possible?

One advise to all of you retaking the DAT. Study hard from now until your winter break ens, take it right before going back to school. If you go to a semester school, you probably have 1 month or so. DON'T EVER RESCHEDULE YOUR DAT. Postponing and rescheduling will bring your learning curved down. Taking a long time to study for it also brings your learning curve down. If you have studied for a few months and don't do well. You need to reassess your learning style regarding taking standardized test. You might be doing the wrong thing. DAT is not an impossible test, and if you study, you should do well.
Talk to a learning specialist at your undergrad school to see what did you do wrong, they might be able to help you.
Best of luck

I agree with Tinker Bell,

for you re-takers you should definately reassess your weaknesses and see what you need to focus on. Studying the second time around should be simpler. Target those topics that you felt uncomfortable with.

See what time of day suits you the best. We are very fortunate to schedule the DAT from 7:30 am to all the way in the early evening. I scheduled mine from 4:30 - 9:00 pm since I used to study between that time anyways.

Like Tink, said you should keep the time span short. Winter break is a great time to study, since you have not obligations for school. Plan a "do-able" schedule the night before and visualize accomplishing it. Look at the schedule again in the morning and think positive. Believe in yourself. This test is more mental than anything. Believe in yourself.

I would not spend more than 4-6 weeks studying half of the time doing 6-8 hours a day. I would do one week 6-8 hours then next week 3-5 hours then go back to hardcore studying making sure the final week is a less intense one. Also, check your sleep cycle and making sure you are getting at least 7-9 hours of sleep. exercise is also great for the brain and avoiding sugary and fatty foods.

I remember I used to take Gingko and DMAE (Dimethylaminoethanol) every day to improve focus and memory and a multi-vitamin and an extra B vitamin for more energy.

It is prepping for a marathon, but remember everything must be tweaked just right.

Also, you need the right prep materials. I have a lot of stuff that I still need to sell off. PM me if you are interested.

Good luck, we're all rooting for ya.

If you know, please answer me. I got a letter from NYU all the way back from October saying that they'll look at my file shortly.

Just two weeks ago, I got an e-mail from NYU saying that they are currently assessing my file and will contact me if I am selected for an interview.

Is this normal? Did you guys also get the letter and e-mail I received? I received nothing else from them.

As for my DAT, I received an > 18 on all sections except bio. I received a 16 on bio. Are they going to make me retake the DAT too?

Foodaddict,

I have an 18 in PAT and a 16 scince average and i was asked to retake the DAT... probably you will be asked the same as well... be prepared!

Comet

but are they looking at each sections? Or do they care more about the academic and PAT scores?

I'm just asking because my total scores are 20/20 and I need to know if I'll be penalized for the 16.

Foodaddict,

they love to see scores higher than 19; so no worries if you have a 20/20 (my opinion). they might ask why you got a 16 in bio.. have a good answer for it and y'll be all set😎

call them up and follow up with the process... it should not have taken them this long to review your application.

good luck

comet ( or to anyone else this may concern ),

Did NYU also first send you a confirmation letter and then an e-mail two months later?

And when did you apply? I applied during the summer.

And when you interviewed, did they actually tell you anything about how you compare to other applicants? For this year, are high DAT scores common for NYU?

You said you were interviewed but was also given a chance to retake the DATs. Was this exactly an option? What would happen if you said you wouldn't retake it?

And the fact that you were interviewed, doesn't that mean you are a competitive applicant? ( never heard of schools interviewing people to tell them to repeat exams )

Just two years ago, I knew a kid that got accepted in May. He had a 2.6 gpa and a DAT 16.

Foodaddict
I like your name! Email Amy Knowles and tell her you applied during the summer and still have not heard from them. It's strange that you have not heard from them! I applied in July and in November, I emailed Amy who told me everything was already sent in the mail! Well, apparenlty, it got lost. So check up with the school to make sure you get your interview.
Also, about your DAT scores---a 20/20 is great! Don't worry about having to retake it. If they ask you to retake your test than I would seriously consider NOT going to NYU!!!!!
I did question why they would interview people when they just tell them that they need to retake the exam! Aren't you at an interview to see if the school fits you? Interviews are also a chance for the admissions committee to see if you can speak english fluently and to make that you are enthusiastic about dentistry. All the other schools I interviewed at told me not to retake the test because they would not have invited me if I did not have the numbers! One girl in my group at NYU was told during her interview that she would not be accepted this year and she should get a masters to improve her application. This really makes me mad because that's not the purpose of an interview! In any case, you have nothing to worry about with a 20/20. You will get into SEVERAL schools!

Pasha,
I wondered the same as you!!!

BEAGLE

foodaddict,

i just sent you a PM..

Comet

Glad I didn't apply to NYU. As I can't do any thing to repair my blemish GPA and I think that master and dentistry are so irrelevant (except you can get into any oral biology master program). Having a master degree does not guarantee a person performance in dschool. Oh, well. it's stink to fly all the way to NYC to hear that.
🙄

Hi all,

Sorry to bring this up again. But how does this sound to you guys:

" Please be advised that the Committee does not wait-list any applicant who, in its judgement, is not capable of succeding at NYU. This status is necessitated by enrollment pressures rather than the strength of your academic credentials."

Please note: I am on the waiting list for now. 😕 😕 😕

Sounds good. Means you were good enough for them to put you on the waitlist! Are you retaking the DATS?

Hi Beagle,

Should I retake the DAT for NYU? I was planning to RETAKE for the DAT to reapply for next year. What do you think? I really want to get in this year, but too bad I have to wait for their final decision.

What did you get on your first DATS? If you have the time, money and drive to retake it, than DO IT!
However, I think NYU takes quite a bit off their waiting list---even up to the first day of school. I know of a girl who got waitlisted at NYU because her stats weren't great. However, she continued bugging NYU and FINALLY, on the first day of school, they took her off the waitlist. She called them up and they asked her, "How soon can you get here?" She is from California and she replied "in 6 hours!"
Did the letter you recieved say anything about retaking the test?
If it did than I would take it over just to be reassured that you are doing everything possible to get in this year.
If it's not your DAt that is the problem, just sit back and keep calling NYU~!!!!

Beagle,

No, they didn't ask me to retake the DAT. Well, I'll just keep my finger cross for this one. Thanks alot for your advices. Good day to you !!!
