NYU Waitlist Explanation

I don't understand. I sent a letter of intent right after my interview in November and I got waitlisted. From my understanding, a waitlist means that the school has accepted you, but there are no seats available. However, NYU continues to give other people interviews as we speak. So what is the deal? Is it that they're looking for "better" applicants to fill their seats, but if they can't find enough, they'll give me the scraps? Frustrated.

Woah. Wait listed means they DID NOT ACCEPT YOU. They have you saved on the side in case people who had higher stats, EC, gpa, or DAT decline their offer (which they will, don't worry). They are also interviewing more people to compare you with. Not to scare you or anything, but my current lab TA was wait listed at NYU and never got in. She has a 18 DAT though.

I don't think wait-listed means accepted. I think it means your application is still eligible. The ones who get newly interviewed and liked will have priority over those who are waitlisted now..........Im not a adm member so I can't be sure.

Assuming most schools work in similar way, Case Western told me they don't give out all seats before December, and save some for post-dec. Which means post-dec applicants with better stats/interview/etc will get acceptance before the "waitlisted" people...

Until they offer all seats, I don't think waitlist even exits........they will probably create waitlist after they send out all offers.....and once some applicants start to turn down the offers, they will get to the waitlist.

which means.......waitlisted people will probably not get anything at least after Jan (when deposits are due)

By the way, don't feel bad I got wait listed at UMDNJ. I think it was because they wanted to invite people who had lower stats than me that would probably attend. I was mildly offended, but then I understood their logic.

I doubt this is the case.

sometimes you have to keep that info to yourself.

and to the OP. a lot of people will drop nyu, don't worry. the cost, in conjunction with the class size boost will prob scare a lot of people off. have patience my dude.

I wouldn't say they just accepted people with higher stats only. Hard to tell how they interviewed, since for all we know they might have interviewed better or it is possible that the OP was nervous during his interview, which might have hurt his interview. Many factors go into deciding who is accepted and who is not.

My interview lasted 50 minutes and we were talking throughout the whole interview. The only question I struggled on, was when he asked me what book I was reading for leisure.

Does any1 know when the new wave of acceptances go out ( i think in jan), will the majority be from the wait-list or from the post December interviews?

By the way OP, a lot of the pre-December people who are accepted end up declining.

Unless NYU is the only option you have, I would advise going elsewhere. My best friend attends NYU, says its like a mill, shes borrowing 440k. Now with over 300 students entering the class, you'll just be a another #

and the school has the capacity for 360 students per class. it used to be 240 in the first year and then 360 for d2-d4 (due to the addition of international dentists). they got rid of the AP program so you now have 360 from the get go.

yes, the interviewer was. the interviewer didn't have time to prepare so he did everything on the spot; skimmed through my resume, LORs, personal statement, and aadsas report

You can only expect good things to come out of NYU for the next couple of years now that management is under Dr. Bertolami's direction.

and i agree, i've heard nothing but amazing things about the new dean. apparently he did absolute work so far. hopefully he continues to do so 👍

yeah.

so it means that if an international dentist wants to practice here, he/she will have to take the DAT and apply as a traditional applicant here...and then complete 4 years, as opposed to completing 3 years (and using the NBDE in lieu of the DAT).

I understand your disappointment. Trust me, I am in an uncomfortable situation as well. At this point, all that you can do is to address your interest to attend NYU again and hopefully your interest will be manifested in such a way that they will make you an offer (may be later in the spring or summer, but at least it is something).

2013 is the final year that international dentist will join NYU via 2nd year insertion. So OUR incoming class of 2013 will not be joined by international dentist during OUR 2nd year in NYU. I know the wording is kinda weird with the two years, but one only needs to slice through the jargon to get to the point they are trying to imply.

they probably look at post dec interviews along with the waitlisted apps so far and pick the candidates that way. so if you're waitlisted, you're prob. competing with another pool of applicants. good luck!

you cant assume that just because you are waitlisted no seats are available, thats just not true at all. They still have plenty of seats, they're just not sure they want to give you one. Be patient and do your thing, waitlisted means they havent rejected you, but havent accepted you either.
