Hello guys,

Do you know when international applicants could be notified either invitation or wait listed (I am a Canadian applicant) ?
 
I got off on Feb 1st as well. Hang in there!

how exactly did you get her number? did you just ask the admissions office? I've been only able to keep in touch with the admissions office who also say to just send updates..

how do they send the acceptance or wait list? phone, email or mail?
 
do they use UPS for acceptance and regualr for rejection/waillist? I called them and they said that the decision has been mailed by regular...:scared:

From my understanding per a conversation with Dr. Mejia, the big movement is usually April/May.

That I dont know. However, I can tell you that if I had hopes of getting into dental school and could only be placed on one waitlist, I would choose NYU. There is always a good deal of movement because so many ppl decline to attend due to the tuition/cost of living (even though it would be awesome). I think I read in other threads that they end up extending around 600 acceptances to fill the ~230 seats.
 
Thanks for keeping the hope alive. NYU is my number one choice and I guess from here on out I just keep waiting. :xf:

I emailed NYU yesterday to inquire and they said it should begin to move in the second week of April, because April 1st is the deadline for the 2nd deposit.
 
I am sure that none of you can provide a 100% accurate answer, but what do you think the stats are of someone who gets an interview at NYU and gets an acceptance (whether they were wait listed first or not, doesn't matter)?

NYU is my one and only interview thus far, and I am praying (lol not really, but just to emphasize how badly I hope to be given the opportunity) that I can get into school this year!

Just from what I have seen on pre-dents, most people interviewed at NYU were either:

accepted, or waitlisted and then accepted, or waitlisted and they didn't update their status after that.

the fact that it's so expensive to go there and the large class size, you have a pretty good shot.

Make sure you send them updated grades and all of that.

If I had to choose 1 school to be waitlisted at, I would choose NYU for those reasons.

Theres still no 100% assurance anyone can give, but it's better than nothing.
 
Does anyone know how many people are on the wait list? And how many they start accepting at one time when it starts to move? And do they do it in rounds so we have to keep waiting for their deposits to get in before they keep accepting more applicants?

To try and cut down on the wait time to fill the spots for the both the school and the applicants, NYU will start making calls when the waiting list moves just to make sure the applicant is still interested. This way, they only send papers to applicants who intend to accept and no time is wasted mailing acceptance papers to applicants that are attending another program.
 
I got an acceptance call today from the alternate list.
 
who gets priority in the waitlist? pre-january or post january? in other words, does timing matter? how does NYU pick ppl from the waitlist?

Congrats nopresident on the acceptance. I don't think it matters when you interviewed because I interviewed in September and was wait listed first week of December and I still haven't heard anything. That's good there is a little movement on the list but it looks like for most of us we will be waiting until April/May or even later to find out if we get in.

I interviewed pre Dec 1st, in mid-November. The same day I got my only other acceptance from UIC, so I'm unsure what I'll do.

I just got accepted (thank God) off the waitlist on the 4th, and I interviewed Jan. 8.

Listen to Phungy, I did n I got in. Try to keep in touch with Dr. Mejia and the admissions office. Update them on what you have been doing. If you don't have anything to update them on, try to find something to do to update them. After I was waitlisted, I started to shadow once a week just so I can have something to tell them. I also told them that I was set to start up as a research assistant pretty soon which I was going to do to put on next year's application.

But I think the main thing that they are looking at is interest. If you don't have anything dental related, maybe just give them a general update on your situation. I even included that I've started taking some recreational lessons lately, 100% unrelated to dental school. Just showing that you are taking the time to email them is going to help a lot I'd imagine. The more they feel that they're not a backup school that you'd ditch for the state school or any other school, the better your chances are, especially if your from far away, like me from Florida. In my acceptance call, she first was asking about my situations with other schools, and NYU was the only shot I had left to be accepted on this application.

looks like the waitlist is moving more active than the last year ? can any re-applicants tell?

Is there any way to find out about how many seat are still available?
 
So NYU is my top choice and I'm still crossing my fingers that I get in. I will be coming with my wife, 2 year old daughter,and our son will be 6 months when school starts. Does anyone know what the good areas are to live? Does anyone else have wives or children? We live in Boise, Idaho so this will be a huge change for us. We don't really know what to expect as far as living but we are excited to make the change and still really hope to get in.

Basically, word on the street at NYU is that they accept the top-notch students who show legitimate interest early on, and then the middle students all get lumped together and interviewed, waitlisted, or accepted as they come in. Regardless of stats, NYU has noticed that the so-called "middle" students end up performing at the same level as the "top-notch" ones, and so there's no rank system to the waiting list.

Living with a family in Manhattan will be quiet costly, and I'm sure you would want some more space with the kids and having to study, which will be even more expensive. You might want to check some areas of brooklyn or hoboken
 
Thank you DrDDSman I took your advice and just did some looking on line and you were right there is a lot more out there that is more affordable. Thank you. Still hoping to get in soon!
 
Do you guys think it would help my chances of getting in if I did some extra shadow hours this coming week so when I call admissions next week I at least have a little something to update? With my job I wont be able to get more than 10 hours of shadowing in one week. Or do you think that won't really matter?
 
did u really like NYU? after interviewing there, i got a real bad vibe from the place. they just didnt seem to care abt their students. you fail and you're out, no 2nd chances. facilities were beautiful, but the faculty just didn't seem to give a ****.

I dont think that will really matter. Maybe if you are doing it regularly it would make a difference.
 
does anyone ever get email responses? i've sent about 4 emails to various admissions directors and staff and have never heard back. i guess i should probably call one of these days to show my interest

I sent an e-mail to Dr. Mejia and it took her a littler over 2 weeks to get back to me. She just responded a couple days ago.

Ya I liked it. Like you said the facilities were great. They have a large class size but they have the faculty to make up for it. One thing I didn't like was they have pre prepared cadavers so you don't get to work on them, but then again they are professionally done so it's easier to see all the details. Everyone that I met was friendly too.
 
not pre-prepared cadavers.... NYU uses plasticized cadavers. not real people. BOOOORRRRIIIINNNGGGG!!!! I want to see some funky stuff when i dissect my dead person...
