"NYU is the easiest school to get into but hardest to stay in. While talking to currently enrooled dental students, I got the impression that the faculty members are more interested in failing students than teaching dentistry. They also told me that the exams are so difficult that 50~70 students fail the science course exams. No matter how hard you study, they'll kick out as many as 50 students each year to make more room for AP students. Even a friend of mine who just started NYU told me NYU should be my back up school as shcool is known for dropping students."

I graduated from nyu a few years ago and the rumor was around back then too. I actually lost 4 friends from failing out 1st and 2nd year and I know there were more. But seriously if you cant pass NYU exams how can you plan on passing part 1 and 2?

I heard this when i was at my UF interview. Our tour guide's brother was in 2nd year at NYU and he said that his brother was working his butt off to stay on top of things and it is very much harder than UF ( state school). He said that for example what takes them 3 hours to study or prepare in sim lab only takes 10-15 mins for international dentists ( GPs and specialists) who join the program. That apparently raises the expectations and kills the student's confidence. He also said that it is not like they WANT you to fail but they make tests so hard that there is always a bunch of people who fail.

So basically you have to work really hard to earn your degree. I totally agree with the person who said it is easy to get in but hard to survive.

I think it would be wise to take advice from a tour guide from a dental school who is describing another school not even through first hand experience but that of his brother with a huge grain of salt...

Well a tour guide that I don't really know personally and only met once from another dental school said his BROTHER went to NYU and had a hard time there so all this discussion of NYU being really hard and that many students fail/struggle and 50 students must get kicked out every year MUST be true!!!!!!!🙄

Really? Really?! I am not saying there may not be some truth to this (every school kicks out students for many reasons and NYU may drop out a little more students by numbers but since they have more students the percentage of those students who fail is not that much different from the national average.) but come on! Also, you have to work hard to earn your degree no matter what school you choose to go to...dental school isn't a cake walk...expect struggling?

i specifically asked my interviewer about the attrition rate. he told me 2 D1's didn't make it to 2nd year and 1 of the students left voluntarily. so that leaves us with 1 person failing out of 1st year

This matter was true 10 years ago and almost all dentists clearly remember those times. My homie is a D4 @ NYUCD and said the exact same thing as Erhatstil said above. They dont kick people out no more. It is simply a rumor these days 👎

AP international dentists are graded on a different curve so it does not make a difference how little they spend time studying.

They enroll about 235 first years. You should check your sources before you post ridiculous stats. Last year's D2 class had a 100% passing rate on the NBDE Part 1. That percentage speaks for itself on the quality of NYU's education. Rumor is just a rumor and probably started by students who slacked off and got kicked out. NYU has a long history of producing great dentists.

I'm quite aware it's a rumor. I posted that statement as an example of some of the ridiculous stuff about NYU that's floating around.

I believe this rumor is somewhat true and those who created it try to freak people out.
However, if you fail NYU exams, how would you get over NBDE and licensure exams to become a good dentist?
Dentistry=getting acceptance+dental school+private practice/associate position+ ... etc.
If you think you are smart, can you answer this question:

You are free to believe however you want my friend. All he was saying was that they have no problem failing people in their courses and because of that you have to work super hard to make sure you pass all your courses.

I'll believe information that comes from a direct source that is factual (someone who actually goes to or teaches at NYU), not a tour guide talking about his bro's experience at NYU. Also, if people slack off and don't work hard then sure...I wouldn't have a problem failing them either; I am just not going to buy into this business that NYU makes things harder than any other school. According to erhatstil whos information comes from a NYU faculty only one person failed out of D1...so I guess all those people with failing grades that the tour guide at UF is talking about must not make much of a difference if only one person failed out of the program entirely.
