O-1

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Have you looked up the qualifications required for an O? Doesn't really look like a visa for someone looking for residency.

Of course I did. Interested in O-1 after residency.

It would be very atypical. If you're currently on a J-1, you'd need a J waiver and won't qualify for an O. If you're on an H1b, you might as well continue on your H1b and get a GC that way. Even if you're on a J2 (meaning your spouse is on a J1), you're still subject to the HRR. So why would you want to explore an O visa? Only reason I could see is if an employer wasn't willing to sponsor an H, but then they are probably unlikely to sponsor an O either.

Sorry I can't help, but trying to see the reason why you would be interested.

Edit: I did think of a reason. You could be on an H and be out of H time.

While the O-1 doesn't waive your HRR, it allows you to pursue non-J1-eligible fellowships, i.e., to delay you HRR/waiver until completion of that fellowship.

Thanks. I wasn't aware that this was a way to delay the HRR.

Getting an O visa is not easy, I do not expect that many programs will consider sponsoring one. And you'd need to meet the relatively strict requirements. All that said, perhaps it can work.
