O.K. to apply to Osteopathic schools if you've applied ED at an Allopathic?

Hey,
I was just wondering if anyone else has applied ED to an allopathic school and if you have, have you started applying to osteopathic as well? I'm applying to Texas too and my TMDSAS is ready to go out today, will it hurt me if they know I'm applying to ED at an allopathic school?

Probably. It doesn't look good if you're not keeping your word to another school.

its a lot more likely that Texas will know, especially if you apply to a Texas allopathic school ED through TMDSAS since both schools would be TMDSAS. The Aacomas schools would be less likely to know.

There is no problem applying ED to an allo school and applying osteo regular admissions. The only time this would be shady is if u planned on not honoring ur ED if accepted elsewhere. If you do get into your ED school, u just have to withdraw your apps from the other schools.

I was under the impression you weren't supposed to apply anywhere else until a decision had been reached on your application at the school.

exactly. thats what I thought too. Thats why ED is such a selective process to begin with. People have to really want to get into that school alone.

I have to say that I am not sure about this one. If you read the AMCAS rules it clearly specifies "MD" schools. It talks about AMCAS and Non-AMCAS, but that is referring to the Texas system. But it doesn't say that you can't apply to DO schools, so I don't know what to tell you. Legally, they specify "MD" and that is all.

From the AAMC web site.

""""""""""""""Applicants Agree:
1. NOT to apply through the EDP if they have already submitted an initial or secondary application (AMCAS or non-AMCAS) to a U.S. allopathic medical school for a M.D. degree program for the current entering class.

2. To apply to only one medical school (AMCAS or non-AMCAS) through the Early Decision Program.

3. NOT to submit additional application(s) (AMCAS or non-AMCAS) until: receipt of an EDP rejection; or receipt of a formal release from the EDP commitment; or the October 1 notification deadline passes. Contact your EDP school if you have not been notified of your status by October 1.

4. To attend the school if offered an EDP acceptance. """""""""""""""""

Amy B and everyone else that thinks this is OK...

That's just semantic Bullsh*t if you ask me. A medical school is a medical school and it's still dishonest to apply to another program if you've applied EDP somewhere else.

my 2 cents

I would not worry about too much if you plan on honoring your ED at the allo school and WILL withdrawl your application from Osteo schools. I think if you apply early enough to any school ED is not that valuable. I was accepted mid sept. of last year without ED. Plus ED may put the school in position to reject you, where you might get an acceptance from that school later through regular admissions.

To do so would be unethical. Some schools, like MSU for example, even specify for EDP that you cannot apply to any other MD or DO programs. That seems like enough to clear up the question to me. Seems very unethical.

Excuse me, but I didn't say it was ok. reread what I said.... I said I don't know, because all they specify is "US allopathic medical school, MD". I didn't answer one way or another as to whether it was ethical. I don't like to tell someone what they should do ethically. I give people the facts and let them decide. If they specify it like Medic170 says in his post, then it would be wrong to apply elsewhere. But AMCAS doesn't include DO schools in their rule, which perhaps they should so as to make it cystal clear.

So please don't put words into my posts that aren't there. Thanks
