I am a new member of the Student Doctor Network and very impressed in what everyone has to say and offer. Now if you do not mind, I have a few questions that I hope can be answered or elaborated on with advice.

1) I've started studying for the OAT which I will take on Sep but I have been so far just reviewing my old notes. Do you think this is a waste of time or should I purchase a studying guide (which one) which is much more useful and provides the material that needs to be studied?

3) I have shadowed a doctor for 40 hours now (same doctor), do you think that would be sufficient enough in terms of the application process?

Thank a load!!!!!

Purchase a study guide. OAT Destroyer, TopScore or Achiever are great for practice questions. There's also a practice test at opted.org. The large Kaplan OAT book (which you'll probably have to get from someone who took the course) is great for review notes. It's better than going through your old class notes because it focuses on the most important things that are generally tested rather than the minute details. The Kaplan book also covers the taxonomy you haven't taken.

My advice is to only ask for an LOR if you feel confident that s/he will write something great.

Blyssful thank you very much for your input. I really appreciate it. What do you think of the Kaplan DAT 2008-2009 Edition (w/ CD ROM) in terms of review notes and a study guide?

My friend has the kaplan dat book and i have the kaplan oat book and they are the EXACT same!

oh and the mcat kaplan book is pretty much the exact same too...

Oh wow I didn't know the review sections were the same. This may save the trouble to get my hands on a 1300 kap oat book.

Thanks for the input!

Yep, they're the same except for the physics section, so if you have something else for physics, then you're set.

1. I think it depends how comfortable you are with what you know. I'd take a practice exam just to get an idea of where you stand. I personally stuck with kaplan but there's others out there i'm sure.

2. It would not be ridiculous to learn it on your own. I have't taken physics II yet, but i'm going to take the OATs anyways. I think i learned as much as i could in the given time, but my way of thinking is why hold back for 6 months to take a class that will help me answer three questions on the OATs?

3. It really depends where you want to apply. Some schools require intense shadowing, and some do not. Where do you want to apply?

Hope that helps.
