I'm getting prepared for the OAT and I was wondering if the OAT kaplan course is worth it since I'm considering it. Anyone that took it, please share your experience and anyone that didn't take it but has heard things about it, please share as well. Thanks in advance!

I took the online Kaplan course. It was a waste of money. Just buy a good review book and study it. There are so many errors in the course material that you'll either be mis-learning things or simply not trusting anything it says. I felt like I should have been getting paid for taking the course, since I was correcting all of their errors. I did do well on the OAT (380AA, 400TS), but that was due to just studying the review book, not their course materials. I doubt that their student instructors in the classroom course would be any better, since they do use the same materials. My friend teaches the MCAT course and doesn't recommend it to anyone.

I think the course helped to make me a better test taker in general. Now, I pay more attention to tiny details that test makers use to "trick" you. I personally felt that Kaplan's practice tests were more difficult than the real thing. Overall, if you suck at taking standardized tests then I would take the class. Your experience depends on your teachers though...I had one guy that was awesome that taught a couple sections and another guy that was terrible. Mainly the classes are long but a good way to help you recognize what you do and don't know. If you don't want to take the class then the review book is the best way to study. I got the most out of it anyways (80% of my study time.) The flashcards are nice too. For me, my test scores strongly correlated to the amount of time spent preparing for that particular section. (with the exception of reading comp. I didn't study much for it) Anyways, I decided to take the class because I suck at TIMED standardized tests and I think it did help.
GPA 3.5 Biology Major
TS 330
AA 320

you have to know what kind of learner you are. are you a self-study kinda person? if so, perhaps the course will be a waste of money. but if you truly think that the course will up your eventual score, by all means go for it! good luck. 👍

I took the kaplan OAT course overall for me I thought it was worth it, when I first started kaplan we took a diagnostic on the first day and my grades on each section werent even above a 300 at the end when I took the real test I ended up with a TS 380 and AA 370..so for me personally it helped, cuz I used only their study materials. I was just really confused on how and where to start studying so I needed some organization...but the class itself isnt that great. the study materials are good, the review book and all the practice/subject tests were helpful..there were errors in some like a previous message had mentioned. But if you dont want to spend all the money on the course buying the kaplan materials off of someone else might be just as great or even better since you save a lot of money. good luck 🙂

The first time i took the OAT i studied on my own using old textbooks and notes. The second time i took it i studied with my friend who was taking the DAT, we had prep materials from the summer programs we attended (I went to TEXOCOP), used the KAPLAN MCAT prep book and flashcards from another one of our friends, and I was lucky enough to know someone who was enrolled in the KAPLAN course so he gave me his log in and I used the practice test to work on timing. In my opinion the materials given by KAPLAN are very helpful, but if you can get the materials without paying for the class, i would advise to do so. My best advice is: study with (a) friend(s), practice on timing (very imprtant), sharpen up on math skills, and answer the questions you know for SURE, then when you have like 5 mins left go through and mark any answer. I have learned that you can study and study, but each time you take the test the questions are different and make reflect a particular stength or weakness you may have, you raise your score much more by not leaving any question blank!! 🙂
