I am pretty sure I will be applying to Ob/Gyn this Sept. but am getting nervous about my likelihood of matching. Here are my stats:
  • Step1 - 215
  • GPA - 3.45
  • Top 15 medical school for primary care (school not ranked in top research med schools list)
  • Ob/Gyn rotation - B, unfortunately....I did well on the exam but the clerkship director at my site was a very tough grader (rotation done at a satellite site, not at the med school). I haven't done my sub-I in ob/gyn yet.
  • MS degree from a career before medical school
  • One peer-reviewed research article as 1st author and one as 2nd author published. One peer-reviewed summary article. I also did a thesis for my MS degree that was defended and accepted.
  • I have a really strong community service/leadership application. I have been heavily involved in my state's medical society as well.
I am am hoping to do well on step 2 this summer and my sub-I (but who isn't, right?), which will help if things go well. I am interested in programs in smaller communities. I don't need or really want to go to a top tier school. I plan to go into general Ob/Gyn and like the idea of being a primary care doctor for women, as well as delivering lots of babies and doing some surgeries. Surgery is fun and I'm excited about it, but it isn't my reason for going into the specialty. I really loved my ob/gyn rotation but am worried I'm not competitive enough an should just opt for FM with Ob. My FM rotation was OK, but really just OK...it didn't get me nearly as excited about being a doctor as my ob/gyn rotation did.

Do I have a shot? Any recommendations for which programs I should apply to? I am open to living anywhere in the US, but am most interested in the Appalachian MTN region (NC, TN, WV, etc...). What about away rotations - are they tough to get at these community programs? How do I choose which one to do if I am applying to 2 dozen programs? I am really just looking for any and all advice/feedback. Thanks!

I don't think you will have a problem as long as you have very nice letters and show a good improvement on step 2ck. There are a TON of community programs around that I am sure would love to have you. If you are able to score 240+ on CK I bet some academic programs would show you some love too. If you really love Ob/Gyn then I would certainly not suggest FM with OB.

Thanks so much! I have had a hard time finding community programs. It seems like FM has a ton of them, but Ob/Gyn seems to mainly be in academic setting at large institutions. I have the ACOG list of residencies and have started to mark which are community-based, or at least in smaller areas. Do you have any specific schools that you know are community programs?

I would look at the program in Asheville NC -- MAHEC (Mountain Area Health etc)

Thanks pjs. That is actually one of the programs I am most interested in right now. Do you go there?

Hey guys I have pretty similar stats and a MS degree as well. I got an A on my OBGYN rotation though... I am a IMG though.. how difficult is it for IMGs to match into OBGYN?
