My aunt recently told me that her ob/gyn performed a tummy tuck operation while he was in the process of performing her Hysterectomy. Forgive if I'm wrong but I did not know ob/gyn's were qualified to this. Could someone please shine some light on this for me, as I am very interested in this topic. Can ob/gyn's really perform breast augmentations and tummy tucks? Forgive me if this questions has been brought up before in this forum. Could someone please give me the name of a website where I can find some info on this topic.

Thanks

Tummy tuck is a pretty simplistic procedure actually. I am sure that many obgyns receive this training during residency others may have to get it after residency is completed
It is a great service to be able to offer your patients.

Hey -- I didn't know some obgyns did tummy tucks!! I was standing in a C-section once -- and thinking hmm would this mom really mind if we scooped out some of that fat? and since they do tubals at the time of c-sections i was wondering if tummy tucks could be done-- i didn't ask my residents b/c i thought it might be a bit unprofessional!

i guess that just goes to show: there's no such thing as an original thought!

i wonder how many practicing obgyns actually do tummy tucks. that's really awesome.

snow.

Yeah, I do it from time to time... also do appendectomies occasionally (when doing hysterectomies mostly).

However, I tend to leave tummy tucks to plastics and appendectomies to the general surgeons.

One thing that really annoys the crap out of me is when I ring a surgeon for help on a case, they whine about how stupid I am, etc... I *DO NOT* know everything... if I run into a particular problem, I ring up an expert. I'm not a vascular surgeon, i'm not a colo-rectal surgeon nor am I an oncologist. *end of rant*

As long as you have a valid lisence to practice medicine in the US and THE HOSPITAL GIVES YOU PRIVILIEGES FOR THAT PARTICULAR PROCEDURE, you can do anything you want, from vasectomies to brain surgery. Now good luck getting privileges, since every specialty protect their rice and beans fiercely.

I've also heard of a few ob/gyn's that perform breast augmentations. What do you guys know about that?

never heard of breast augs, thats too far above the waist to be considered OB/GYN territory. but yes, some OB/GYNs are trained to do abdominoplasty. And no, abdominoplasties are not simple surgeries, they are MAJOR surgeries. I personally don't agree with OB/GYNs over stepping into the plastics realms, but such is life.
