Just wonderning--could someone give me an example of a typical shelf question...the difference in difficulty between appleton and lange and, say, NMS is quite big. Did anyone here have a successful strategy for preparing?...lastly, ithis is my first shelf exam so i was curious to know whether I need to know information outside the realm of obstetrics and gynecology.

Do not buy the question book from A+L for ob/gyn, I had that book and I found it to be useless. I'd recc sticking with blueprints and pre-test, unless you really want to go into ob/gyn, then I'd recc purchasing an actual ob/gyn text to study from. NMS is in that muddy region, in that it's too thick to read cover to cover and too thin on details to use as a reference. I wouldn't recc any of NMS' books except for their question books or unless you really feel like you can read one of them cover to cover.

Shoot, I have the A&L book for OB/GYN (as well as for medicine, which I didn't use, and for surg). Guess I should think about getting the PreTest one.

I just took the test on Thursday. It was tough but fair. I used Blueprints and did the questions in NMS and the questions at the end of the chapter in the text book. Blueprints was more than enough to prep for the test but you won't do very well if you have no common sense. There are 100 questions, all clinical based, and exactly like Step I questions. Learn what you can on the wards, read blueprints as many times as you can, and do the questions in the end of the chapters of the text. Good luck.

Blue prints for OB/GYB was good. A&L was pretty good. But questions in Blue prints were better. Pre-test fits nicely in your pocket and you can do that while standing around in the hospital. These question books add up quick when you buy them for lots of rotations. So your best bet is to pair up with a friend who has a different schedule and share, or buying used is good too!

just finished the shelf...
if you have q book for step2 it is almost exactly the same format. Blueprints was enough, but i think what helped the most was learning on the wards. A lot it is management and dx of the dz.
