Is it possible to be just an Ob (not that I'm complaining, I'd gladly do both)? Also does an Ob/Gyn specialized in maternal fetal medicine do deliveries or any surgical procedures? If not, which type of Ob does?

Thanks

Im sure you could just do OB is you joined the right group that only needed someone for deliveries, possibly doing shift work. A "normal" OBGYN does does surgical procedures/surgery/office procedures/all of the above when dealing with OB and GYN.

MF docs deal with high risk pregnancies/high risk procedures. In other words they dont break a sweat and their anal sphincter doesnt pucker when they stick a 6 inch needle into the belly of a prego.

Sure, you can do just OB. There are more hospitals that hiring "laborists," which is basically where you do is take turns working on Labor and Delivery and delivering babies.

If you do Maternal Fetal Medicine, then you can do high risk deliveries. You can also do some procedures like amniocentesis and cerclage insertions (i.e. closing the opening to the cervix if the woman is dilating too early).

Thanks for the replies, I'm still wondering though what type of OB does c-sections and such? Surgery? Does the doctor also get to take care of the baby if there are problems or is that where he/she would be taken to neonatology and the doctor who did the delivery would not be involved anymore?

A general OB/gyn does c-sections. If you were a laborist, you would do c-sections.

A general OB/gyn can also do GYN surgery - ovary removal, hysterectomies, etc.

Usually, the OB/gyn does not take care of the baby. If the baby is very premature, it is taken to neonatology or pediatrics. As an OB/gyn, your primary responsibility is to the mother.

To give an example...Once the child is born the OB might turn his head only get a quick glance of the sex of the baby to congratulate the mother for her boy/girl. Then, as he is walking out of the room the nurse yells the apgar score at him so me may put it in his note.
