I am sooo torn between the two specialties.

I loved OB while rotating but the issues the come with it really put me off. I have an MPH and am really into womens health....but dont have the patience for Ob even though that is what I loved the most about the specialty and I really have no passion for GYN (surgically) but love the out-patient aspect.

On another note I love Rads......but it is such a passive field....

I am just looking to get a feel....those who have matched in OB...are you truely happy???
What are the future prospects of the field?
as a Female....can have a "predictable" life in OB?

help...... :scared:

I loved OB/GYN, too. OB was fun, but as you surmize pretty unpredictable. If you are procedure oriented, then look seriously into interventional radiology. With the newer imaging modalities, cool techniques and procedures, it's a rapidly changing field. Like OB, it is not without its shortcomings. I don't think it's a passive field, but if you are interested in straightforward diagnostic imaging, you are right. You can chose to have little patient contact.

Or you can move toward angiography, imaging guided biopsies, cryoablation of lesions, and much much more. I too was torn between ob and rads, and ended up switching, in part due to the liability issues of ob. Rads in not without liability, because a missed finding is a sure fired trip to court, but at least its a mistake made, unlike OB where you can end up in court if there is less than a perfect outcome for any reason whatsoever.

Another thought is mammography. Its' a specialized subset of women's health and rads. You'll do mamographically guided biopsies, interpret mammograms, and be involved in women's health that way. Mammo has changed the demographics of breast cancer from Stage T3/T4 at diagnosis to T1/T2 which has changed the outcome for many women since its recommendation.

I really liked OB, I liked gyn better and really liked the surgery and the overall idea of fully managing patients and women's health. But, I'm much happier in rads, all told and glad I made the switch.

They are both good fields, and I changed my ROL from rads first to ob first and back about a dozen or more times before I finally left it alone and landed an ob spot.

thank you very much for acutally taking the time out the answer my thread.

you response really helped me....I am still flip-flopping back and forth and like u said will most likely continue to do so until Feb....

but a day will come when I will have to make up my mind I guess.

thanks again

IR is a great field but dont forget how competitive it is to get a fellowship and the lifestyle is worse than OBGYN. Oh yeah, they get sued as well(I know because my father is an IR doc in miami).

whats with this getting sued crap? you don't want to get sued, don't freakin practice medicine. pretty simple if you ask me. do you people not plan on taking care of plaintiff attorneys or what?

sorry...pet peeve of mine. 😀 😍 😍

If you haven't decided on Rads by now. You have a huge uphill battle. Sure, Step 1 scores are big, however so is a commitment to the field. The reason some people with 240+ scores don't match into radiology is because they have not done enough investigation into the field so the interview is a train wreck. High Step 1 scores give you the interview but once you are there you need substance to secure a radiology spot. The average number of applications for a radiology applicant is 40. Add 20 for prelim/transitional programs. Add another 20 for Ob spots. Good luck with applying to 80 different places. It is in your best interest to choose NOW and commit yourself.
