T1 -- polydipsia/uria/phagia (with apparent weight loss) are classical symptoms. T2 almost never presents like that (or so I've learned).

Probably not relevant for boards purposes, but children are getting T2 diabetes now. http://www.cdc.gov/diabetes/projects/cda2.htm

Actually, this is very relevant. There's nothing about that presentation that is inconsistent with either type of DM. Age makes type 1 more likely, but type 2 diabetics absolutely present with weight loss, polyuria, and polydipsia. Given her weight, it's impossible to say based on the presentation which one she has (although, as I said, it's more likely type 1, but not necessarily).

I agree, I hate diagnosing based on age, while sure statistically you may be correct, in the real world, it can occur in all ages and you will misdiagnose the smaller percentages.

I read somewhere / heard somewhere, that T2 rarely presents with textbook symptoms like that. Hmmmmmmm.
