Not degree-related, but I thought it was interesting. Was wondering if anyone did any study in this and if they could tell me what can be concluded in these statistics:

http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2007/fit.nation/obesity.map/

Perhaps there is nothing much to do in the south and cars are used more frequently or it is the type of foods. Being a native Texan, our diet usually consists of tex-mex rather than sushi... Im interested to know why this figure is this.

While I have done no studies on this, I have to say that if I were doing a report on it, I would look at other increases. Is there a significant number of people on antidepressants and could these be causing the rate to shoot up? (What is the average weight gain of a person on antidepressants? Birth control pills? The shots to stop pregnancy?) I'd also look at how often people report eating out. The busier I get, the more times I eat out or buy frozen foods in the freezer section of the store-- not to mention exercise less. Since returning to school, I have gained 15 pounds which I have to work off some how and yes, oh yes, I am on birth control that immediately shot my weight up eight pounds-- this can't be good for my body. My kids and husband and I used to spend summers gardening and putting food by, picking berries, going to the u-pick farms-- gosh it was a great thing! But this summer even our one short family vacation was at a hotel that offered us civilized wilderness. We never even went to the u-pick farm as once finals were over I just puttered around the house and went for a walk every day. I was just tired!

I think the obesity rate increase is a symptom of something way bigger and more wide spread that anyone realizes. Many of the people that I know are on either antidepressants of some sort or birth control that has caused their weight to shoot up. What kind of an effect is this having on people? If this comes to light and is true-- how likely is it that the AMA will admit this? Anti-depressants and birth control methods are an industry.

Maybe we need to ratchet down to a 35 hour work week from the 40 hour standard and hopefully give people mroe time to spend exercising and doing things with their kids. (And the med students will say, "There is a 40 hour work week? WTF?")

I think there is definitely a shift in our society, both culturally and socially.

Are people just accepting of their new shapes or tuning out the negative press on being overweight?

I heard that the generation of kids coming up now have a SHORTER life expectancy than their parents....first time that has happened.

I'm not sure why, I think it is just so pervasive.

You think that kids nowadays have more stress than we did when we were young? They come home and relieve the stress by playing video games and eating than interacting with their other stressed peers?

......antidepressants and could these be causing the rate to shoot up? (What is the average weight gain of a person on antidepressants? Birth control pills? The shots to stop pregnancy?).....

I had no idea that would be a factor. Intersting, it is. But by the data of the map and birth control pills, the south uses it the most? But not only birth control pills, but motivation, you think? you seem really busy managing your family. I cant even get the energy to get milk, let alone! (im native Texan....)

I think kids are much more aware of the world, because of technology and the fact they are far less sheltered (or so it seems). I think video games contribute to poorer social skills development, and encourages isolation.

So would this be a stress that even we as adults could not cope with? But we manage and sculpt/pave their lives. From this, we as adults dont understand how we can be good mentors and escape by eating too much? And from this, kids mock this and eat as much as we?

I am so interested in why the south has more obesity than the north, east, and west. It could not be from the type of regional foods since California shares similar regional foods (mexican). But let's also notice that South Americans are not all obese.

Why are the findings this way as shown on the statistics?

I think 'modeling' has a HUGE impact on how adults shape a child's life. It seems that all of the research supports this general idea, but I think we as a society under-estimate the influence of others/society on our children. Little children know all of the brands, and I'm not talking about Kashi cereal....I'm talking abour McD's, sugary cereal, etc.

In regard to your question @ eating.....that is a great example of poor eating habits being passed through the generations. I think some may eat too much, but it is the type of food and how we eat that is problematic. Portion sizes at (most) restaurants are not 'normal' sizes, the advent of the "Super Sized" meal, and the quality of food eaten (processed) is really damning our health.

With the vast majority of 2 parent households being 2 income households, how we as a society relate to food is very different than it use to be. Eating on the go (not a good eating behavior), taking in abnormally large portion sizes (not good), and eating more processed foods and foods with additives (high fructose corn syrup, preservatives, etc). As an aside, I think the reported numbers of emotional eating is very much under-represented, and we are just now realizing how much that is effective every day people. There has been a huge (no pun intended) upswing of OA meetings (just one factor), but more than that....I bet if someone did some research on eating habits, they'd find binge eating AND emotional eating far more than initially reported.

I think this is a false assumption. Organic / fresh foods are popular in many places in California, though I can't imagine they are nearly as prevelant in the south. Southern cooking is really good (I like it), but it isn't good for you. Fried foods galore, combined with the "fast food" stuff I mentioned above.....bad combo.

I don't know on the birth control-- it never worked for me  I'd always gain about 30 pounds from bcp's then loose a third of it overnight. . . Actually, each time it was from being busy and forgetting in the ten minutes of time I'd have with my husband for passion that I'd been on antibiotics.

I'm thinking that bcps and antidepressants could be a factor. The weight gains have gone up in recent years along with the rate of antidepressant and new types of bcps.

Here's an interesting article about weight issues in THE SECOND BIGGEST STATE

It's about patients needing elephant sized MRI scanners for patients.
