i began my 3rd year with the obgyn clerkship on tues and here i am 2 days later about to go on call for the first time... and i am completely lost!! i can't keep all of these damn abbrev in obgyn straight, and just feel lost/inadequate at conferences/case presentations (which are plentiful)... i haven't felt this insecure about my knowledge base in many years, WHAT DO I DO?! i have tried reading blueprints, brs obgyn... but it isn't doing it for me.... i just need to somehow get the ball rolling, any suggestions.

it doesn't help that this is my 1st rotation

First, go to your Blue Prints and look in the beginning of the book. There should be a section with abbreviations for OB-GYN. That should make it simpler for you.

Is your call OB or GYN?

If OB, then just relax. The resident knows how lost you are because they were there themselves. Read up on Fetal Strips, stages of Labor, and Induction (3 pretty short chapters in Blue Prints). Then on call, follow the sign out closely and know what the patients are doing. Volunteer to write the labor notes on 2 or 3 patients. This will be a q2hour task. Do it timely and you'll be loved. Everytime you do it, go over the strip carefully, examine the patient (chest, heart, reflexes!!!-Pulm Edema, HR, Hyper reflexia, etc) and write good notes... then when the intern is writing his/her notes, ask them to go over the assess/plan with you. By the end of the night you'll feel fine, comfortable and good to go (trust me!)

If GYN, make sure you know the patients on the service (history, surgery, stay, plan) and check their vitals every so often. Pay close attention to post-ops and their temp, urine output (at least 25-30cc/hour), and stick with your resident! If they are covering ER, go with them and discuss their Assess/Plan with them.

Anyhow, hope that helps ya out. Show interest, have fun, and if you are with an intern, realize that they are stressed since they just started so bear with them!

Good Luck!

GB, thanks for the advice... I am one week into the obgyn rotation and feel much more confident and have gotten used to the pace... it is funny how stressed I was a few days into the rotation as I now look back at last week-- that's how things go sometimes, heh?

have a good week

PS. TAH/BSO's are pretty neat (neato mesquito, ever use that phrase when you were younger???) 👍

if you're interested in doing lots of deliveries, don't pick the primigravidas as patients...when they'll deliver is unpredictable.
