obgyn programs in nyc - got the scoop?

Hey -

I'm planning to apply for obgyn, hoping to stay in nyc, preferably brookyn/manhattan. Currently, based on info the programs supply (working hours, schedules, away electives, #of sx/births etc), my top choices look to be nyu, columbia, st luke/roosevelt.

Anybody got info on these programs, or any of the other nyc ones - competitiveveness, resident quality, resident kindness/happiness, etc? Anyone have relevant info from interviews here, or inside info from folks in the programs?

I interviewed at NYU and loved it. I would have loved to have gone there. I really enjoyed the residents on the interview day. I know a recent graduate of their program that loved it as well. I think they work alot, but come out very well trained. They do a lot of "family planning" (particularly 2nd trimester ABs). They work at Tisch and Bellevue which I think is exceptional. Great exposure to different populations.
I would recommend picking at least one program that you *think* you would be happy at and doing an away rotation. NYU, Columbia, and Cornell are all very competitive. And ob/gyn was much more competitive on a whole this year. Good luck!

anyone else? got info? not to play the annoying numbers game, but this whole thing with ob being 'more competitive' this year.... has me worried....

I got 237 on step one, don't yet have a class rank but have been high passing/honoring most blocks/rotations, with good evaluations. I have no real extras in the field so far - no publications, etc., and i probably won't, i don't think. I do have an mph that i completed concurrently with the first two years of medical school.

I know this doesn't make me competitive for something like ortho/optho/radiol; what about concering cutoffs for ob programs? anyone have any sense of that?

hey -- actually a 237 on step 1 is very good and does make you competitive for all three specialties you mentioned. if u read in the optho forums -- i think a 226 is the national average for ophthomology. we had ppl in my class match into ortho and rads with scores below the 230's on step 1.
at the same time -- i'm sure there were ppl here with high step 1 and step 2 scores who didn't match into the obgyn program they wanted. 🙂
so neither let it hold you back or give you too much confidence. find the places you want to go -- and do away rotations if you like. It can also help you figure out that you don't like the place afterall. the best advice is to apply broadly if you are not geographically restricted --
one thought on doing away rotations: they can work in your favor or against you.
