My matched institution sent me a letter telling me that my position is only good for one year, and then I will be reevaluated and my contract extended for another year.

My question is: does this work the other way around? If I do a year at this location and don't like it, can I transfer to another program without being penalized by ERAS, or is it a contract violation (ie does matching obligate me to spend my whole residency at the institution)?

Smalltown guy-I'm also at your level, but my understanding is that after a year, you are free to transfer to another insitution or even another program. At my school, I know of an ob/gyn who did a PGY1, then went to internal medicine, did a PGY1, then went back to ob/gyn as a PGY2 and finished her program. She completed her full contract year for each PGY1 before moving around, and was not penalized to my knowledge, or they wouldn't have let her switch around. Of course, this was years ago, before the 80 hour work-week was in place. I think that after one year, you can transfer without penalty. The real issue is if you break your contract in the middle of the year. At that point, my understanding is that it is at the discretion of the institution whether they turn you in to NRMP. At my institution, we had a PGY3 in gen surg switch to a PGY1 in IM in the middle of the third year contract. I'm not sure if there are any consequences to her, but I think that it would be up go gen surg as to whether they report this person or not.

Anybody else with more info?

It works both ways, I think.

It does. Your contractual obligation is for one year. After this they (and you) can go the devil.

Now that's what I'm talking about :meanie:
