Hi,

There are many hospitals in the US (both university and community based) which allow observerships. The duration is something you need to work out with them. and obviously, I havent heard of anyone getting paid during observerships. I would suggest that you look at AMA Freida database http://www.ama-assn.org/ama/pub/category/2997.html or www.pathologytraining.org and search for programs you are interested in/geographically suitable to you etc. etc. and start emailing or calling up the hospitals to ask for their policies regarding observerships. Observerships vary depending on the place you do it, some of them allow more hands on stuff while some other programs adhere to "OBSERVING".

good luck
