Hello, Looking for those with experience obtaining residency. I will be going out of state for my pharmacy school. I was wondering what is the quickest way to get residency.

Say for example I start next Aug. I read somewhere that you need to live in a state to obtain residency. I had an idea, what If i move in June and got a job for the summer. I would be paying that states taxes and I would be a resident no?

Furthermore, would it even matter as far as the schools concerned? Would I have already be marked as an out of state and be charges as such? Possibly different per school/state. Just asking for some experience and what state you've had.

Thanks ahead of time!

Completely depends on the state you'd be going to. One of the schools I applied to would allow you to be an in-state resident after two years, but would not be eligible for in-state tuition once you were a resident. Some sort of clause to prevent college students from swapping residencies from state to state.

Ask the adcom about it, they should be more than helpful with any questions pertaining that.

My understanding is also that this policy varies widely from state to state, but here in KY you have to be able to prove that you came to the state for some reason other than school (which is going to be incredibly difficult to do once you're accepted as an out of state applicant). I've heard that in some states a year of full time employment there is enough to gain "in state" status, but take that with a grain of salt.

Good luck, I was in my state for 10 yr, had kids with the state birth certificate, owned a house and because my graduate degree was from out of state I got out of state tuition. Had to appeal with taxes, deeds to house, employer certifications, marriage license, ad nauseum till they finally agreed to give me in state tuition. Its very difficult, at least 1 yr full time employed in the state before you start school is the norm for most states.
