Hi everyone,

I am having serious trouble getting NC residency for tuition purposes. I was wondering if anyone can help me out. I have been living here for almost 4 years (since 2008) in my own off-campus apartment and still can't get residency from my school!! They have just declined me and I have worked for all years for my mothers company out of my apartment, have worked as a teacher's assistant in NC for 2 years, got my NC drivers license (2010), NC voters registration (2008 and voted twice), NC vehicle registration (2010), NC off campus apartment (2008) and filed my taxes as an Independent in NC for the 2010 year! I called them up and they said I'm listed dependent on my FASFA, but I didn't even use it b/c I have enough money saved up to pay for my tuition, apartment and meals. I don't know what else I can possibly do! I really want to stay here in NC after school and want to attend either ECU or UNC dental. Should I put myself down as a NC resident on my ASDSAS application? I am very confused and frustrated on what to do. Thank you for any help!

I am not 100 percent sure about this, but most people can get in state tuition after one year at unc, but you will not be able to apply to ecu unless you are a nc resident.

thanks Jon, but I feel that I am a resident given all of my background info.. I have been here for much longer than the 12 month requirement and have everything.. I just don't know what to do

I would try calling the dental schools, and see what needs to be done. You may qualify as an instate resident, and then there would be no problem at all.

Just email/call each dental school and ask them for the person that handles residency issues for incoming students. I was asked to fill out residency validation forms for both schools, and had to submit a bunch of documents to prove I had established residency in NC before they approved me.

dds, if you don't mind me asking, what is your age and what did you do specifically to prove you were a resident of NC? Thanks!

You may even have to prove to the school that you intend to live and work in NC after graduation and not obtaining state residency just to attend dental school.

ECU's criteria:

Got this from UNC's website:
