Hi,

On the AADSAS application a required questions asks what your state of legal residence is. Is this what schools use if you are applying to in state programs? Or do they ask for a secondary that requires you to prove your residency?

I ask because I'm thinking about going to UIC but would need to have IL residency to even be considered. I am thinking of relinquishing my CA residency to stay with my girlfriend who really wants to go to Northwestern Med (she's been accepted for this app cycle). We would move there this summer and I would effectively have been a "resident" for 1 year since I'm a DS1 in 2005.

I've read their website and all the SDN threads regarding residency but none clarify what actually determines your residency as far as admissions is concerned. Since I'm submitting my application before she will probably pick her final matriculation spot, if that question determines my residency forever, I need to time it properly.

Cheers,
Marshall

To answer my own question, as stated by the UIC admissions office:

Marshall,

The application cycle is June 1, 2004-December 1, 2004. If you plan to move to chicago in June, then simply hold off on submitting your AADSAS application until you have moved. It takes a year to establish residency. You can only claim residency in one state when you submit your AADSAS application. However, if accepted, you will be a resident upon matriculation, so you may indicate on your AADSAS form that you are an Illinois resident. For more information on the criteria for establishing residency in Illinois, please contact our Office of Records and Registration at 312-996-4350.

Sincerely,
Ann Shorrock
