I just switched to pre-med and wondering if taking these classes in one semester and doing the same for the next semester be stupid, especially if I need to get A's.

If I take another year to ease out my schedule, i'll be in college for six years :scared:

It's doable, but it will be hard work.

I finished my first semester and am about to finish my second semester of having O. Chem + Physics + upper level Biology (Genetics, ect.). I took each section with their respective labs. I didn't find it too stressful. I completed it while working 20+ hours and volunteering on the weekends. It should be feasible.

Next year is going to be fun. Molecular Genetics, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Calculus III, and Biochemistry Lab. But of course, it's nothing compared to Medical School.

What did you end getting that semester. I just switched to pre-med and I have a lousy GPA, and must get A's.

Good luck with next year 👍

I got a 3.5. I got A's in everything except Organic Chemistry I. It wasn't due to time restraints though. It was because I relied solely on my book and lecture notes. I'm doing a lot better now after I bought supplemental material for the course. I read about your community college story and mistaken weed possession. Good luck.

Btw: I ended up getting a C+ in Organic I. Good luck with getting all As. I need balance in my life. I couldn't imagine just being a neurotic book worm all day. Ewwwwww. 🙂

Currently doing it now. O-chem 2, Physics 2, and Molecular Biology + other electives. Currently have straight A's.. Hopefully I can keep it up for the next 4 weeks..

Rezzz, taking that kind of schedule is a gamble. You gotta have complete confidence in your study skills. If your GPA isn't where you'd like it to be right now, it might be too much of a gamble for you.

I started pre-med halfway through college and I had no choice but to take a semester overloaded (Bio/Phys/Gen Chem) with a few other credits stacked in there to go towards my Humanities major. I worked really, really hard and went through a lot of stress. I had no life and was "that guy who keeps cancelling on his friends."

In the end I pulled through with my highest GPA in college ever (3.94) but I sacrificed too much to get there. I've since realized that I need at least some modicum of balance in my life. Even if it means getting a lower grade on that midterm or final, I think it's pure masochism to constantly put work over family, friends, gf, and yourself.

I just wanted to give you a perspective on what I went through and what I learned from the experience.

I did it for two semesters. My only 4.0 semesters. It will take work, but it took studying smart, more than hard (though it's hard studying as well) to get it to happen.

I also later found out that it looked really good for recruiters for other programs, as well as for med admissions, to make such a showing in one semester.

I am finishing up the second semester of the 'triple-kill' course load. Basically, it sucks. However, once you finish, you can take courses that you will enjoy and pertain more towards your major. Only do it if you already have built up strong study habits. If you want a real life outside of school, maybe reconsider?

It is do-able however there is no need to rush your way through things. I wouldn't cram everything into one semester. I'm sure you'll thank yourself later if you don't overwork yourself now and actually have a fun before med school.

I just finished the bio+orgo+physics combo. I ended up with A's in bio and orgo and an A- in physics. If I had to do it all over again, of course I'd say yes since my grades ended up okay. However, if you had asked me every day over the semester, I would have said no every time. I didn't really have to give up much of my social life (I'm naturally an introvert anyway), and I had free time on my hands to do about 25 hours of extracurriculars a week. I probably only studied about 1-2 hours a day and then studied a lot (and I mean a lot) over the weekends.

However, you have to be really strategic about how you study, and there is no way I would've been able to handle it if I hadn't had previous experience with science and math classes. I still had trouble managing the stress, and just the prospect of doing horribly in all three of those classes was enough to make me want to switch from being pre-med to something else, because essentially that semester contained all of the requirements for med school. If you end up taking those classes this semester, you have to be really serious. You have to study very smartly and very hard leading up to a test, and you have to be confident that you can do it. If you're not confident that you can do it, you probably won't be able to...mentality means a lot.

Definitely doable. Question is do you work? Fulltime? Parttime? How did you do in previous terms? Grades?

You just have to study your ass off. That's all. Good luck.

I am doing Orgo I, Cell Biology, and Physics I this fall. Just keep on top of things.

I am taking Gen Chem 1, Gen Chem 2 and Bio 1 this summer with 40 hours of work and 20+ hours/week of commute time berween home, school and work. Wish me luck. :xf:

I believe Orgo is a pre-req for biochem, no? Maybe it's just my school...and they don't let us take the pre-reqs for a class at the same time as that class (ie: can't take orgo and biochem in the same semester).

it depends on which school you are at. Here taking orgo and physics alone is already considered to be difficult. many pre meds take physics in their 3rd yr away from orgo. but then again some people exaggerate, right now I'm taking Orgo II, physics II, microbiology, Orgo Lab, and 2 other classes, i work about 9 hours a week. i find it to be pretty challenging, I currently have a B+ in orgo going into final, finished physics with A/A+, microbio going in with A-, and Orgo lab ended with A- most likely. i feel physics took the most time, then orgo lab, and orgo. I took bio in freshman year and it wasn't that hard, just lots of reading before exams.

I would take them all together. If you can't keep up with them as an undergrad, you aren't going to be able to do it in medical school either. Consider it good training.

Best of luck!

Um I wish there was a smiley that could animate the shooting of yourself in the foot. But for now I will settle for:barf:

Lets add up the numbers shall we?
So im assuming you are taking them in different terms ( clearly), with Bio and Gen chem in same term, assuming it is 6 weeks per summer term, at 4 hours of Lecture and lab for each class, thats 8 hours of school right there,

Not to mention working 8 hours a day, assuming (if you had any brain yo did 16 of those hours on the weekend) that leave 24 hours during the week which is roughly 5 hours/ day.

4+4+5+3 hours commute. 16 hours days during the week...
That is absurd. would be doable if you didnt have to STUDY and do HOMEWORK! So I will say 2 things.
Youre either full of $hit, trying to flex those SDN muscles
or
really effing stupid.

Cheers.
P.S. ITs not a race. Get bad grades in those classes and you can kiss medical school good bye

Next year I'll be taking (by necessity) o-chem, physics, an upper level bio, and a writing class... all at once...on top of working 15 hours a week and commuting to and from school for 10 hours a week. I can't wait. :scared:

Hahha! Funny.
1- I am not full of ****.
2- I am not stupid either.

I have taken fulltime courseload before(undergrad years) and worked 80 hours a week plus commute time. So it's doable and possible to get good grades. You just have to work around the time available(including nights) and gte your homework/studying done. Unfortunately I am not lucky like others that have loads of time and money available.

Thanks for your not-so-nice comments.

my bad brother, no one is trying to put you down, but that is insane, and if you really want to do something with those classes( ie get into MeD school) then you wouldnt be playing russian roulette.
You may have been able to do some pretty outstanding things in the past and kudos to you for it, but what youre proposing is ludicrous. You may be a very intelligent person, how ever the human body has limits.. With the schedule you are proposing you will go quite a few nights with out more than 4 hours of sleep which, statistically is disastrous. Hopefully you get the worlds EASIEST professors..
Thinnk about what youre doing...
Good luck to you.
If anyone on here dissagrees with me please say so, Ide like to her an explanation behind this guy/gals lunacy.

Edit: Now if these terms are the 8 week summer terms then i retract all previous statements..
but I highly doubt they are.
