I have an ochem final tomorrow, and I only had the chance to like review material a little bit like only twice last week, as I had to study for other prior finals, which took up time for me. Today is my only day left to study for this hardcore through practice, so I was wondering if anyone has advice to utilize my time in studying effectively. Of course I don't expect to do super stellar, I just need to pass it to make a B at least in the class. Any tips will be appreciated. Thank you!

Ok so exam is in about 24. This is what I would do at this point:

1.) If you got a final review study guide, go over it.

Do you understand it?

yes - ok good, move on.
No - ok, ask a friend

2.) Go over your notes.

Do you understand it all?

yes - ok good, move on.
No - ask a friend

3.) Go over the more convoluted materials, like lecture powerpoint slides.

Do you understand it all?

yes - ok good. You are fine to go.
No - ask a friend

guess this is pretty general but the final should be composed with more of the recent material (stuff after exam three not yet tested on)

Hire a tutor from the school if you can that might have previously TAed or taught the class and knows what they focus on for optimal results

OP, in one of your past posts, you said that you're now a sophomore and that you had a 2.6 cumulative GPA your freshman year. I can't imagine why you're so eager to settle for B's.

After this semester, you pretty much have to get straight A's (with maybe a couple of A-'s or B+'s) in order to stay competitive as a pre-med. It's definitely doable, but it'll be tough. Good luck.

realistically, a B+ would be more possible for finishing off this class

OP came here for studying strategies, not to get ridiculed about his GPA. No chill on SDN.

@Pinkswan Coffee, notes, Khan academy, testing yourself a little on each topic covered in the course. Whatever you don't feel ready for, go back over. Repeat until you can't take it anymore and then get some rest. Review later today before your final. Good luck! Please learn from your mistakes in the future. I wish you the best, however.

It depends how you were studying throughout the semester and how you did on your 2-3 other exams previously.

If you had low scores and didn't study and practice much throughout the semester, then studying for one day won't do anything at all especially for the whole semester worth of material. It's not about memorizing terms. Ochem is about practicing problems and understanding the concepts.

If you did well and and studied well throughout the semester, then follow Robin-jay's plan.

Thank you! I used organic chemistry as a second language for revision and worked out problems on concepts that were weaker earlier this semester.

I'm a her btw lol

Much apologies

Lol, "ridiculed." 🙄 `

Yes. Don't grill her about her GPA. She obviously knows what her GPA is. She doesn't need the added stress of someone telling her that she has to get all A's from here on out, or she won't get into med school. Stop being a gunner.

It's easy for you to virtue signal like this, because you wouldn't be the one footing the bill for OP's SMP.

When you finish 25% of your undergraduate career with a 2.6 GPA and you're planning on going to medical school, you can't settle for a bunch of B's anymore and you can't procrastinate studying for finals until the day before. The average DO matriculant has a 3.5 GPA. I'm sorry if I'm a "gunner" for pointing this out, and I'm sorry if it "adds stress."

Yes, going into OP's history and quoting their GPA is gunning. chill. She knows she shouldn't be cramming, but it happens, and her expectations aren't unrealistic. She isn't even through 3 semesters of UG, and you act like its impossible for her to get into med school.

OP I wish you the best of luck with your Ochem final. Learn how to get A's in 2 science classes then 3 and continue that streak. Learn from the mistakes you made this semester and don't repeat it moving forward. Good luck.

you act like its impossible for her to get into med school.

In my post, I said "It's definitely doable, but it'll be tough." Apparently "definitely doable" now means "impossible"...?

In order to get a 3.5 overall GPA (the average for DO matriculants), OP would have to get a 3.8 overall GPA for her sophomore, junior, and senior years; in order for this to be possible, she has to get almost all A's and A-'s. That's a mathematical fact. Again, I'm sorry if sharing this important fact with OP (who is clearly still struggling with her coursework) makes me a cruel, hurtful "gunner."

It's easy to act "chill" and noble when you have nothing to lose and someone else has everything to lose, but that doesn't make it the right thing to do.

No one is arguing with the mathematical facts, but telling pre-med students they need A's only at a certain point is a double-edged sword.

If the OP thinks A's are the only way into med school, but starts getting too many B+/A-'s, then the OP may become discouraged over time, which can cause kind of a "shut-down" attitude, and start getting C's etc., because there's "no point anyway".

However, having B's on your record will permit you into some pretty good SMP programs and post-bac. options, which will eventually get you into med. school.

So there is a difficult balance of realism vs optimism that needs to be accounted for. Too much of one or the other can cause cruel outcomes.

My advice to OP: Do the best you can, earning B's won't destroy your chances, but may take longer to get accepted to med. school. Also note that you need A's only at some point in your academic career. To earn an interview while in undergrad., you almost need exclusively A's.

EDIT: I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with any above users in this thread exclusively, this is just my opinion.

I had a semester with a GPA <1.0, and I just got accepted. OP is doing way better than I was at that time...

I definitely appreciate all the realistic two cents everyone has on here. And I am very much willing to do a post back if necessary by the time I graduate. Thank you 🙂

Congratulations on your med school acceptance! I wish you the best of luck for the rest of med school!!

@Pinkswan feel free to update us on how you did on your exam! If you feel like it, ofcourse!

LOL

All I can say is EFFFFF O-chem. Glad that poopstorm of multiple retakes is over. It's the only class that kept me outta MD schools.

Most USELESS class I've ever taken.

Just be glad you got a B in it and move on to a more useful course.

Well can't confirm that I got a B in the course yet. I will be relieved if I do hahA

I enjoyed the class...And I've made thousands of dollars tutoring it since I took it. Personally I liked the way my professor taught it...tests were open book open note...but you really couldn't find the answers there as you had to understand why reactions took place.

How did you make "thousands of dollars" tutoring it?

Because I took the course 4 years ago and I've always picked up one to three students a semester since not many people tutor it in my area...3 students 2 hour a week a semester at private tutor rate I think you can do the math.

hmm. Maybe I should do something like that in my spare time. I earned my money the old fashioned way, paid employment to teach organic chemistry courses at the university.

Time to go rogue.

LOLZ

Yeah.

I WISH our professor made it that way. Until I realized it was just about studying that crap over and over and over and over... and OVER again.

I was seeing mechanisms in my dreams the nights before exams.

We all also took the ACS exam as our final which we did closed book/notes and every one did extremely well on it

How did you do?

How did you do?
The anticipation for these things situations is intense! haha. Since it's finals week, I'm curious if they won't have the scores in for a little while. My university is kind of slow on that at the end of the semester, to make sure they have all of the other grades recorded.

I have not gotten my results back yet

Please update.

Don't pressure the OP. I always hated when people said "update us" on grades, because I definitely want to if its good. But if its not up to expectation, I don't wanna update you peeps :bag:.

I agree. I never asked anyone before. I am not necessarily waiting for the grade, more for an update how studying for one day before final exam had worked. I am really curious.

Sure, I hope the OP tells us how it went overall as well!

To update, I got my grades back and got a B in Ochem. Ofc haven't seen my final yet but I'll be sure to look at my final grade and see what I missed (so I can improve) when I return to school. Thank you everyone for the advice you guys gave before my final!

That went as well as planned, then! Congrats!
