I was just about to sign up for Ochem tonight for the fall semester and noticed the schools around here carry chem1B as a prerequisite. Is this universal? I was just going to take chem1B concurrently so I could register...or would this be a mistake because 1B is important in understanding Ochem? Sorry if this sounds ignorant but I was under the impressions the two subjects were quite different and neither is needed to understand the other. Thanks for the help.

yep, its a prereq, and im i ohio state, and over here, there is no way in hell they would let u take one without the other....

before i started ochem, they all told me they had nothing to do with each other (gen and ochem). But the truth is that they do, you just don't notice that when you're working with all those resonance structures and analyzing what type of bonds you are working with, etc....

believe me buddy, even if you do understand Ochem without the second gen chem, you'll be at a disadvantage...why go through that?

I took the second half of Gen Chem & Orgo I concurrently...I had to get special permission from the head of the Chem Dept. She strongly discouraged me from taking them at the same time, but I talked her into it & received an A in Gen Chem II & a B+ in Orgo I. It's not easy to take them together, but it's definitely doable. 🙂

Thanks for the info. I wouldn't even try to do this but I am taking the DAT next summer and I haven't taken any Ochem yet. This means I have to get started on it in the Fall or there is no way to have it finished before I start studying for the test.

Okay well I just checked with the department and they seem to be pretty strict about this and not likely to approve my petition. So now the question is (and I know it has been partly covered here before) will I be able to do okay on the DAT with only Ochem 1 done? Someone here said that the DAT is 90% Ochem 1, so if that is the case then just learning 2 on my own should let me do okay right? Thanks again for the help, I really don't want to have to put Dental school off another whole year for just one course.

i think its totally doable...you might just wanna read some material before doing the actual test like the kaplan DAT book...but other then that, it won't hurt ur score that much...and even if it does, not signifcantly...i wouldn't reccomend it, but i think its toally doable...as long as you your ochem 1 ofcourse...🙂

A grad of Ursinus College, in PA, was telling me that over there, they take Gen Chem I, then take OChem I and II, then go back and take Gen Chem II after the year of OChem. Certainly not the norm though...

I just took the DAT 3 weeks ago without taking Ochem II, and I got a 21 on that part. However, I took Ochem I during the May & June and I got an A-. So, if you can master the Ochem I material, you should do alright on the DAT. On my test, I saw a handful of questions that we hadn't covered in class. But, I spent about one week plowing through my text book and Kaplan's material learning the Ochem II stuff. My advisor told me the DAT was mostly Ochem I material, and I thought he was right, but that may just have been my test.

Well, kind of wordy, but ultimately, it's my opinion that you can do alright on the real mcoy without Ochem II. (As a small disclaimer, my neighbor tried the same thing, but he got a 16 on Ochem, but he also received a C from his Ochem class). I think it's up to how confident you feel about the material.

Thanks for the anecdotes and info. I think I will try to just do Ochem 2 on my own and do as well with ochem 1 as I can....it seems to be the best possibility right now.
