I believe the answer is D. NaHCO3 forms an aqueous layer with carboxylic acids. HCl then protonates the sodium carboxylate.

i would say C???maybe..???seems like the only logic answer after D lol i thought D at first too lol.

ttran is correct, the base takes the most acidic proton from the acid, and the HCl restores the acid

you guys are right. I for some reason read the answer "D" as "B" and was wondering how the hell an aldehyde would react with HCO3-.

Anywayz, you're right. It's D, but I had thought C at first.
