cyclohexane with a CH2CN group treated with H3O+ and heat...

it becomes cyclohexane with carboxylic acid group attached.

why and how?

Looks like Nitrile hydrolysis which leads to Carboxylic acid production... The COOH simply replaces the CN and byproduct is ammonia or ammonium salts (Sn2 Reaction)...

I was actually specifically asking why this happens.

How are the atoms interacting?
