Alright so I will be ready to take Organic Chem this coming Fall.

I emailed an adviser at my school and she said that O Chem I lecture is taken one semester, followed by O Chem II lecture and O Chem lab I the next semester, followed by O Chem II Lab the semester after O Chem II.

That does not seem right.

I was under the assumption that O Chem I lecture/lab were taken one semester followed by O Chem II lecture/lab the next.

Kind of throws off my plans for taking the MCAT on time..

Is this accurate information?

Ask another adviser. The class and the lab should be taken concurrently. It should only take 2 semesters to complete your entire organic chemistry obligation.

Thing is that is the main adviser for the Chemistry Department. Feel like she would know. My school is stupid about things like that. Saying O Chem I lecture is the prerequisite for O Chem I lab. Makes no sense.

Thanks for the reply man. Will try to see what a different adviser says..

Even if you must take the lab after the lecture as you say I see no reason why you would have to delay taking the MCAT. You shouldn't learn anything in lab that you would not already have a solid understanding of from the lecture course.

I obviously don't know how your school works but my school did orgo 1 fall semester, then orgo 2 and organic lab second semester. At my school there is only one standard class, and you can take "advanced organic lab" after orgo lab one... Perhaps your school is similar? Maybe orgo lab 2 is an "advanced" class that isn't necessary?

That sounds like my school but the wording is off. What my school meant was that you need to be enrolled in both at the same time because what you cover in lecture will then be covered in lab. You take them both at the same time. Once you register for ochem lecture it should let you register for the lab.

Trust me just because they are the chairman that does not mean anything. The chem advisors (all profs) were mostly useless. Can you see the catalog for spring term of 2014 (or whenever you are planning on taking orgo 2) if there are lab sections the same semester as the II lecture just sign up for it.

It looks like there is nothing I can do..

So here is my problem. I was planning on being done with all prereqs by next summer so I could use it to study for the MCAT and apply in August.

Now it looks like I will have to take ORGO II Lab in the summer Could I still effectively study for the MCAT over the summer as long as I have taken orgo II lecture but will still be in the lab?

Yes you can still study for it, the lab will not be much help for the MCAT anyways.

My ochem 2 lab used primarily the methods covered in ochem 1. You should be fine
