I haven't taken Organic Chemistry yet so I was planning on teaching myself...are the Ochem questions hard and very in depth or is it just very basic? Also, is there no Genetics on the PCAT either?

Yes, they would probably be difficult enough that you wouldn't be able to do them.

They involve a starting material, a reagent and/or catalyst, then the answer choices which they want to know what is formed. You might be able to get the cliff note books on it and study basic stuff such as E2/E1 SN2/SN1 type mechanisms but it would be harder not knowing the mechanisms behind it.

Also, naming/nomenclature is on the test, you have to know how to name them, but that part of the test was super easy.

Hi,
I don't think the organic chemistry on the PCAT is necessarily hard, but I do sort of think it is hard to learn it all on your own (IMO). I didn't really know organic going into the PCAT because my class was seven years ago and I didn't learn it then either. My strategy was to do really well on the gen chem. For organic, I learned IUPAC rules, functional groups, and isomers. Anything more complex in organic than this (ie. reactions), I just filled in a bubble and didn't waste time on it. I got an 80 on the chem section, which might not seem like a great score to a lot of people, but for my background I was pretty happy with it.:hardy:
