*OCPM Class of 2011*

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Anyone else going there next year?

Hello,

I work in the admissions office for OCPM. If you have not heard from anyone already, please let me know where you are from and so forth so I can perhaps locate others who are attending OCPM from your area.

If you have any questions about the program before you begin, please do not hesitate to contact our office. The students you hopefully met during your interview are also a terrific resource.

Yeah, when is a good time to start looking for housing?? now, for example, might be a bit early if we were to plan on moving in august, right?? anyone done much research on areas of cleveland??
mucho gracias

I guess you already know, but at the interview they hook you up with a pretty good load of info on housing and I plan on starting there. I am pretty familiar with the area though already and I can't wait to start looking. I'll prolly start over winter break or the spring semester. So does this mean that you are planning on going there next year? Moving in around the beginning of August is probably appropriate, I'd say.

not to knit-pick or anything but technically you guys will be the class of 2011 not the 2007 - the 07'ers graduate this upcoming spring - oh how i envy them lol...

regarding housing options, I strongly recommend the coventry area by CWRU becuase its safe, affordable, loaded with college students, close proximity to your shopping/grocery needs, and close to the highway - which brings me to the next point, you guys should definately consider getting a car or carpool for transportation because public transportation in cleveland is extremely unreliable.

ha. i dont know how i messed that up! i didn't even notice. thanks.

Anyone else planning on going there next year?

Sorry for the goof...

the farther away you get from downtown, the cheaper the rent will be . . . but also next year the school will be in Independance so one might want to live close to I480 OR I490 for traveling purposes, the area already mentioned is good, other good places are Parma and Brookpark

i live in north roylton, it's just 7 miles from new school, it's great and like a little suburbia, and much safer than downtown, remember the school is moving to independence and as a first year, the ones who dont live north of the city, most if not almost all are planning on moving out of the city. overall safer, cheeper, nicer, all around good. not to discredit downtown or all that area aroun CWRU, but most is a little ahhh, it's just better around north royalton, strongsville, brecksville, broadview.

i will be attending if nothing happens that makes me change my mind 😀

i will be there next year!

buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuump

to any of the incomming students for the fall of 2007, do you think that if the school closed at 8pm that it would affect you? do you have an opinion of what you would like it to be? it is currently open for study 24hrs.

Hey there, I just want to let you know that I am not a fan of the school closing early either - especially when students have to study for anatomy exams at night (lab). However, in terms of normal late night studying at the school - I know that many of the students, including myself used to study at the Case Western library - it's safe, really quiet and comfortable - the study areas at the current school are terrible and the heating is non-existent in the winter...so we'd go study at the Case library since we have access to study there without any problems. I think in principle, it would be great if the school provided a 24 hr study area in the new campus - but i don't see that happening - so, i'm just letting you all know that Case western has a 24 hour study area at the library - very quiet and comfortable (temperature, safety). Just an option for you guys i guess...

thanks for the responce, if we can get 20 or so people to say that it would influence their decision to come to ocpm, they will go 24 most likely. in terms of case western, the school is moving out of downtown cleveland and case would not be close. the majority of people dont want to drive into downtown cleveland, the ghetto to study every day and leave at night. that in my opinion is a plus of the school moving to independence, you dont have to come into town your first two years. if your interested or willing to help get the amount of people IM me and we'll see what we can do, or at least help me ask people , current and prospective students on their opinion.

i just think for 25K a year, and a class size of 107, you can afford to let the students have access to atleat some study rooms 24hours

i'll join in your fight

What time do you want the school to be open until? I personally don't understand why people want to go there in the middle of the night to study. But, that's just me. And, from what I have heard, they will not keep the new school open 24 hours. They will not even consider it.

well it wouldent be that hard to have key card access to a certain part of the building set aside for study, they had it at the current location till it broke last year and they just didnt fix it because they knew that we would be moving.

i along with a large number would like to just have a set place for study in the evening. i think that a school that is moving out of a downtown atmosphere, to a rural suburbia where there is no other place to study should stay open till 12 or 1 am. i belive that 8pm is a bit Ridiculous for a med student.

we have started a Petition for the school, and they have said that if we can show that a good number of students would base their decision on attending OCPM due to the fact that they, as soon as class is over, we'll kick you out the door and not let back in till 7 the next morning, that they will "consider" other options.

anyone willing to sigh the petition can do so by sending me their name or screen name to my email account and i can add it to the list..

and i'm not saying till the middle of the night, but yeah, as a first and second year student you spend a ton of time in gross anatomy lab and again in lower, that's kinda hard when class ends at 5 on most days and the school closes at 8, and open for only a couple of hours on weekends, when you have a class of 107, sometimes you want to go into lab and look with your small group and not have to wade through 30 other people...

please dont take this as rude, i just feel that this is.... with this going into effect, and the responce we have gotten from the "uppers", and some of the other things that have been "not responded to" i would not Recommend OCPM, and would not have came here. once they sell you the school, your theirs, no if's or but's

they need to realize that the currents have a voice and will express it, and that can affect their future class sizes. it's just not right

Yeah, I can see where you are coming from. Well, hopefully your petition works. I see no reason why they cannot keep it open later at the new location.

As for lab, you have to know when to go in. When I would go in the lab, it was pretty much empty. But there were those times when 30+ people were in there at one time. That does get annoying.

Again, good luck with your petition!

I'll be there in August!!!!

I just sent my deposit in today, it was a tough decision for me, but im really excited!😛

sweet thanks!

edit- all i could find was OCPM summer of 06

Howdy PODMAN...I recently did some shadowing through OCPM at the VA Hospital and the Cleveland Foot & Ankle Clinic. Waiting to get my MCAT scores back from the January test next week, and was thinking about trying to enter the college this Fall. How do you like the school??? Everyone seemed very positive🙂

Hello Sir (or Madam)!

Glad to hear your positive experience at the VA and CFAC. I hope your MCAT scores treat you well. OCPM has been good to me because I've been good to that school - I worked my rear-end to get to where I am today so my experience has been positive. As much as I love to hear positive experiences from internships to the school or visits to the VA, I always tell prospective students to make sure and interview at at least 2 more schools for comparison purpose. You have to decide and see which school can best prepare you for residency and ultimately make you the best doctor that you can be. I recommend you visiting some of the top schools, and then decide which school, given your circumstances, can best prepare you. But please know that you still have to work hard and prove yourself - because it is ultimately YOUR responsibility to learn, absorb, and apply the material presented regardless of which school you go to.

Best of luck, and feel free to pm me at any time.

Hey everyone
I am new to this particular forum, I orginally was trying for dental school until I heard about podiatry. I am really excited, I was accepted to OCPM in January and am looking forward to attending the school. I know it says 7 people have posted that they are going there....How many has that number reached now? If you guys have any questions please let me know, I have become pretty familiar with everything down in Cleveland at the school. Thanks

im pretty familiar with Cleveland too, what area are you from?

I am from Michigan but have been visiting the Cleveland area lately.... how about you?

I think I am going to live in parma. The regency apartments. Did you want to become a dentist before? B/c, that was my first plan when I began college.

Re: OCPM's New Campus

Here are slide photos I found on the new campus. Reminds me of my undergrad. Apparently this is 7 miles from the old DT campus.

http://students.ocpm.edu/realtyone/

What is "Realty One"? Is that the primary business sponsor? Will it be their office, too? Or did OCPM buy this campus from Realty One and all names will be changed? Also, will the DT campus be completely abandoned/sold? Or will it still be used for clinical gatherings, as it is located in the hospital district?

PS: My Ohio interview in coming up in a couple of weeks!

Good day.

yes, they bought the building from a realty company
the old campus is going to be cleveland clinic parking

I am currently a dental student at Case Western and am looking to sell my house. For details please check the classifieds here.

Thank you.

Hello! Does anyone at OCPM know if they are running a summer schedule of prep courses before the official start in August? I thought OCPM had some type of program that did that. Thanks!

Hello I'm debating on going to Azpod or OCPM and am having a hard time deciding because I like both alot. I was wanting to get some feedback from ya'll since I will be a prospective OCPM 2011 person. Thanks!

i know this may not help but i am in the same boat. but with a different school. i REALLY like Ohio and another school (didn't apply to AZPOD) alot and having a hard time deciding. They both are great. My hubby and i did the pros and cons thing and that only made it worse. i thought it would make things easier 😱

I would suggest you do the same, maybe it will work out better for you. List the things you absolutely must have to be happy AND successful at each school. If they are equal on all those levels (curriculum, resources, etc) then you may have to go for the things that are lower on the "must have" list. I guess things like activities around the city, culture, dining, close to family, far away from family, etc.

hope that helps...

Yeah, all those factors must be weighed when considering where to go. I had a chance to visit 3 schools and I must say OCPM is the best so far. I am happy about the new location (such a great site), plus its only a 5 1/2 hour drive from my home in east Pennsylvania. I have to say that the people I met there were very nice including the dean. As for me, my wife and child will stay home and visit me some weeks, or I can try to get back home now and then (5 1/2 hour drive is not bad) between studies.

Hello All,

I will also be attending OCPM this fall. I have been married for a year(no kids) and debating on whether to buy a house in the area or just rent. For the above poster who is selling the house, message me with the basic info to see if it interests me.
A few quick questions
Is there much difference in Parma, Bedford, Broadview Heights as far as living conditions(crime, etc.)

Thanks

Great, look forward to seeing some of you at OCPM this August. Podman, you might be able to help me with this question. I would like to spend the rest of my summer studying anatomy and getting ready. Would there be any way you could give me information for a contact person who could give me some of the information that is covered in the first year anatomy course (and in what detail); like systems covered, muscles, skeletal, cardiac, GI, ect...I am an adjunct anatomy professor, and I have numerous resources available to me this summer but I would like to know how the course will be conducted. Any information you could give would be helpful! 🙂

Since I'm not there yet either, just like you, I can't say much. I do know that we have one semester of gross anatomy (first) then the second semester is lower extremity anatomy. Also, with the move, we won't have the same anatomy professor that is there now. We are also going to have a different biochem professor. Hopefully, podman or other students will jump on here and give any details they may know. 🙂

Sounds great, look forward to meeting you at some point. Yes it would be nice to know ahead of time what will be covered. That way we could optimize the prospect for good performance with these courses.
