I have done 1000+ of volunteer hours, one publication, 2500+ hours of research, 600+ shadowing, 6000+ hours of other work. I am as competitive as he or she is.

It's about making connections with Admissions Officers before the app cycle begins. This way you're an actual person and not just some random name on paper with a bunch of stats. That's how I'm scoring my interviews so far.

How do you make connections? This is my second time around and I haven't learned those things yet.

flying if you make a predents profile we can compare stats and discuss info, but since i dont see your info I cannot state anything that would help you.

I have no connections with any admission committee members. I think it's because I applied really early.

flying, i see have similar stats for the DAT (except I have a 20) but my GPA is higher than yours (not being cocky, just stating a fact) I have an oGPA 3.45 a sGPA of 3.55 and a BCP of 3.65. I submitted later than you (because I took the DAT late August) but I also think I got lucky with the MWU; they sent out interview invites to me very fast (a week or so after submission) i am still pending in all my other schools.

Well, your application isn't very strong, and you didn't exactly apply broadly. You also submitted two entire months late, so your app probably wasn't even completed until mid-late August. Do you have any low sections on your DAT (did you make the cut off?). Maybe your personal statement sucked. Maybe you had spelling mistakes throughout your app.

Stop comparing yourself to other ppl purely based on stats. You don't have a 4/4, 25/25/25, so numbers don't matter for you.

BU = hands out completely random interviews to people. not surprised you haven't heard back from them yet,

Howard=you're not black,
Temple = ,
Tufts = hasn't sent out interviews yet,

Well, I can't disclose all my proprietary secrets but I will say that I spent the past two years visiting schools, maintaining a dialog with admissions officers, networking with dentists who have connections with schools, etc. I put in a lot of investment of time, effort and some money, but it's paying off now.

He got more interviews than you while you guys have the same stats --> he is better applicants than you in some way and the adcoms like that.

He might have been through hardships in his life to get to where he is. Better personal statement, apply early etc. so many reasons why he gets more interviews.

Seriously????? Who says this to people?
Again and again this guy spreads his words of negativity throughout the forum.
I would be interested to know how many schools he has gotten interviews at and what puts him in such a high position to consistently try to degrade others.
If this guys does have interviews, I think it would be pretty hard for adcoms to not be able to see him for his true negative character and admit him.
Honestly, with his character (as he has shown consistently through the forum) I suggest that he consider a different profession than dentistry because he certainly is not it to help others.

So please people, do not let him get to you.

Kinda sucks fall always has to be paired with winter tho. It gets cold up here!

lol i usually dont like fall or winter, but sometimes like this year fall is kind of nice, its cold but sets the mood for constant gmail refreshing like 4 million times in 1 day :laugh:

Yes, please encourage flying to negatively question why others are getting interviews instead of him. I'm sorry that you found my post unhelpful, but I think I pretty accurately showed him why/how others could be getting interviews instead of him. All of my suggestions were just possible reasons why comparing based on stats is not the right way to do things. Please show me what part of my post was "degrading" lol. But whatever, Mother Teresa. I'll let you sprinkle your magic dust on his application and tell him he's going to be OK with a late-August completion.

Yes, Mr. Baker2010, amalgamgrillz is indeed mean but his comments on the schools are not wrong.
 
I wouldn't consider amalgamgrillz as a mean individual... but just very blunt and honest about his opinions. Anyhow, good luck everyone! Just hang in there... your time will come. 🙂
 
I personally know someone who got an interview from ASDOH in Feb and got accepted. (only school out of 8). You guys may argue that ASDOH doesn't care about stats so much so it doesn't count, but they interview nearly 700 and selects 67. (based on 2011 as far as i remember - I could be wrong)

In my opinion, we never know till March. At least, that's what I am telling myself. lol

I have to agree with you amalgamgrillz, I used to be annoyed at your tones but you do spread good information. The real purpose of this forum is to figure out how to get yourself into a dental school and your postings, as a whole, are beneficial to applicants. You give direct answers from lots of experience of applying.
 
While I think many appreciate amalgam's blunt honesty (and honestly, sometimes I do too; he/she has good info to give), I think it could be delivered with a little more tact. I don't mean to say that people should be sugar-coating bad news in this forum, but a little more encouragement would be beneficial I think. Just the way you phrase something and whether or not you suggest solutions can mean the world to some people. And as for people who say that that's pandering too much to people's sensitivity, what do you expect to be doing when you're a practicing dentist? Don't expect to be able to come off as rude to some patients and not to other's and chalk it up to people being too sensitive. Let's tread lightly when possible.

Once he starts paying me to be sensitive to his feelings, I'll deliver my criticism, sandwiched between compliments. I wouldn't have given two sh*ts about his complaints, if he hadn't involved another person (mowgli). He can go ahead and cry about not getting interviews, but there is no reason to make someone else feel stupid for getting interviews with the same stats.

But you are rude and hastily judgmental to many others, not just him.
Caring about someone's feeling is kinda a big deal in dentistry. If you have no empathy or compassion and seem to quickly judge others how would you enjoy the dental career? I do hope you just have a diff forum persona. Otherwise enjoy the many patient lawsuits in the future.
