Hello,

I am curious as to what the path would be for an OD to work on more pathology than the typical OD. Would residencies help? Location? I am also interested in becoming an OMD, but I am indifferent about doing surgeries. I want to be intrigued by my work without giving up my time for my family. After working at a private practice, I have noticed that the emphasis (for this practice at least) is on retail. We don't get many ocular diseases at a the mall.

Any advice is appreciated.

Number 1 way to see more ocular disease, dont work in a mall. If you had a serious problem with your eye would you go to the mall? I wouldn't. In many private practice or OMD/OD settings you will see more.

Shoot, I want to go get my wife some lingerie and myself a new jacket while waiting for the Mall-Doc to remove the piece of metal from my cornea.

I know that the mall isn't a great place for ocular diseases. Maybe I didn't make my questions clear enough.

What is the approximate ratio of routine eye exams to other things for a typical OD?

Would specializing in ocular diseases or refractive surgery lead to more interesting pt cases?

Thanks for the responses.

If you want to do ocular disease all day go to med school. Or work your butt off, do a residency after OD and get lucky to get into the VA and only see mostly older male patients all day.

There ain't no easy button lolz.

But if they removed that piece of metal so you could see, you may not be married anymore.

KIDDING ;-)
