Background: My "aha" moment was when I was 14 and I underwent a huge birthmark removal on my thigh. The procedure was cosmetic and due to the superficial nature of it I had the option of local vs general. I asked to be put under local instead of general (terrified of going under back then), so I observed both procedures (2 due to nevus size) and I fell in love with the process, the OR atmosphere, and the reality of my anatomy as a human being. Since then, I scribe in an ER and seek out possible laceration repairs to observe them, and I regularly attend autopsies (which also, how should I list this on my app? as EC?)
When people ask how I knew I wanted to study medicine, often the reactions to my story are along the lines of "are you a psychopath because what the hell they sliced your leg open and you literally spend your Sundays with dead people..." and that is the absolute opposite of what I want to sound like.
I recognize that I can't (nor do I want to) change my story as to why I want to become a physician. There other reasons that have to do with the difference surgeries had on my psychological state, my celiac disease, etc. that are more reader-friendly, but ultimately those two procedures were the lightening bolts, excluding them would be a disservice and likely confusing. I won't be applying for a bit but this is something that somewhat worries me. Do you think my story will make adcoms uncomfortable, and if so how can I prevent that without botching it?
