Hello,
I currently am finishing my junior year and have a GPA of 3.5 but trending in the positive direction. I am curious what all your thoughts would be on my chances of getting into an MD school (I would prefer MD over DO)
- My GPA is a 3.5 - it started at a 3.8 my freshman year then had a bad sophomore year with a lot going on but after this semester it came back up to a 3.5.
-I am in the military and work as a medic so I'm trained in pre-hospital as well as hospital care and worked in two different air force hospitals for a year doing anything from driving an ambulance to blood draws to catheter insertion, etc. I have experience in the ER, ICU, med/surg unit, birthing clinic, inpatient/ outpatient units, wound treatment, hyperbaric chamber, and the lab. I work on a team now as the lead triage medic for a package that responds to natural disasters, large chemical spills or other CBRNE incidents. I received a state-level award for my actions throughout the year (my sophomore year) which I was required to be out of school a large amount of time (in my opinion led to a deflated GPA).
-I also shadowed/interned with a family care physician the summer between my sophomore and junior year, my senior year in high school, and will be there 8 hours per week in the upcoming fall semester. Additionally I currently work as an LPN at an adult day care center for elders with Alzheimers and have been there for 2 years.
-I have not yet taken the MCAT but plan to the summer of 2016
-my LOR will hopefully be written by my current commander who is a professor at a the medical school associated with my current school, or potentially the doctor i am currently interning with.
I feel as though I have a lot more experience, mainly clinical experience than the average applicant, however I am curious if that will be enough to get me beyond my less than stellar GPA. Any opinions would be appreciated.
