I was rejected from the Stanford MSTP program sometime between the MCATs (31T, 36T). I'm a 3.6 GPA neuro major, 3 years of interdisciplinary research. I figure it might be worth a shot to appeal the decision, except that I'm applying for a fulbright. On the chance that comes through I'll probably just reapply.

Basically I don't want to somehow tick them off, if the institutional memory sticks around for a while. Should I appeal? Thoughts?

Appreciate it.

uh... because my MCAT went up 5 points. Thanks, but can someone give me a more objective view of the odds? tough questions prob...

I am feeling sorta the same way. I got my rejection on Friday and was pretty sad for a bit. I had a high MCAT, variety and depth of research experience, etc. Oh well.

people have been rejected with better numbers

Hey me too. I guess they mass mailed the rejections! 🙁 But you of all people should definitely not worry, because from what I remember you have a ton of interviews lined up or already gone to.

Maybe they don't like us rivals from Cal?!!! 😕

38r and a 3.8 didn't get me an interview +pissed+

sucks...have a beer and move on....
that's what i'm doing at least....
but that was 4 beers ago..... 🙁

Hey Cheer up... you'll be alright! I've heard Stanford has a different process anyway and for some people who get into Stanford, that's the only place they get into. I don't know if this is the truth, it's a word of mouth, maybe someone from there can comment on this.... but at least it will make you feel better! 😀 😉

You could appeal but I *highly* doubt it would make a difference and it might hurt your fullbright. I had a 41 MCAT and got rejected last year so they aren't rejecting you based on scores if I had to guess.

I had no idea there was such a thing as an appeal. Has anybody actually succeeded at such a thing?

I understand your position - Stanford MSTP was my first rejection last year. As far as I know, everyone I talked to last year during interviews got rejected right off the bat (pre-interview) from Stanford MSTP. I wouldn't worry about it too much - I think they're looking for a very specific group of folks, and Stanford MD is traditionally a little harsh on east coasters (if you're one). With your stats you'll get plenty of interviews elsewhere. Good luck! 🙂

Hey y'all-

I appreciate all the responses - decided not to appeal as a result.

Stanford MSTP admissions is a joker process anways.

Last year, they had alot of problems because the MEDICAL SCHOOL rejected alot of candidates right off the bat. I was one of them.

Then a month later, you receive a letter in the mail from the MD/PhD program inviting you for an interview. They had no idea how it happened.

I met an actual MSTP student there who had the same process.

I wouldn't worry about being rejected from Stanford. Alot of high quality candidates are rejected from there and accepted at alot of premiere institutions. Then there are people who are flat out rejected everywhere else but get into Stanford.

Finally, I don't buy the whole east coast/west coast discrimination idea.

In my year there was an applicant who applied to 23 programs, and was invited to interview at 22, including all the top schools. The only school that they were not invited to interview at was Stanford. Look, don't sweat it. Nobody knows what's going on over there, but the other SoCal schools are very nice also.

Other SoCal schools? If you tell Stanford that they are a SoCal school, they are sure to not grant you an interview. 😛

23 schools? I hope you didn't have to interview at all of those schools to make your decision.

I had to take one too many red eye flights

I'm speaking about someone else who applied in my year. I applied to 14 schools and interviewed at 11 myself. The guy I know who applied to 23 I know didn't interview at all, maybe 15? I can't remember.

Oh yeah. If you're talking about last year, then I may know who you're talking about. That guy only interviewed at about 9-10 different places, and ended up with partial funding at Stanford as an MD+PhD (non MSTP).

I got an interview at Stanford, but got turned away at other top schools. I imagine it has a lot to do with how well each applicant fits at a school research-wise (at least in my case).

I guess including you, at the very least, three of us (me, you, and clockitnow). There might be more that I either don't know of or I am forgetting. Clockitnow is also a Cal BioE.

I am actually not BioE. I am mechanical engineering!
