I tried to search the forum but couldn't find much info to help resolve my dilema.

I'm going to be a MS IV this coming fall and will apply for IM in the Navy. Due to unforeseen circumstance, I have not able to do my ODS. I'm trying to decide whether I should wait to do it after graduation or before? What would the advantage and disadvantage would be? Do you happen to know anyone who went to ODS after graduation and still get pick to go straight thru for IM residency? Would it hurt my chance of getting an acceptance to one of the internship program if I'm not done with ODS by starting date of internship? How flexible is the program regarding this? Thank you so much for your advice. I emailed many people but did not get a good answer.

Just my opinion, but if you show up to internship more than a month late I wouldn't plan on going straight through anything.

The reason for this is that you are going to be behind the curve compared to your peers and a month less of internship when it comes time to evaluate you. Would it be impossible, no, but in all reality I'd give you a much better chance of going straight through if you show up on time.

Now remember rotations start in Jun 30/July 1 so you could potentially miss the orientation time and still be fine.

I'm in the same position. I missed my ADT due to personal issues the summer between MS1 and MS 2 I'm about to start rotations and I don't see where I can find time to do OBLC for the Army, however I am prior service Enlisted (Marines). Would not completing OBLC before the start of residency hurt my chances of training straight though for residency and put me at risk for having to do an GMO tour?

Thanks

thank you for finding that post. I don't use the forum much and don't know how to find my own post :-(

I don't mind doing GMO tour after my internship year but if I can go straight thru is a better deal; that's why I asked. Also, most Navy IM start in early June so I will be at least 2 months late if I do ODS post graduation. Would the program still accept me for their internship year? I could go from midMay to June but I need to take off one wkend for graduation. I asked couple officers and they said ODS won't let me go home for graduation. Should I contact the program directly to ask for their opinion? If I use my 4th year AT to do ODS, I will graduate late compare to my classmates and I won't be able to attend the military graduation for my school. I really dont know what is the right thing to do in this situation. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The programs won't have a choice but to accept you but its still a bad idea. The "military graduation" from your school is a lousy reason to get your internship off on the wrong foot. Its a waste but this is the position you've put yourself in. Use the ADT.

What is this military graduation you speak of?

It's not only military graduation but also my school graduation. Military graduation is a special ceremony that my school do for all the military people.

If I do ODS during my 4th year, I will need to make up my rotation until June 3rd or even the wk after that as well. Internship start on June 6th so I will miss the orientation wk.

I just want to know if I start internship late, do that put everything behind? I will go to GMO tour late, late for my residency later on? Thank you for the input.

At my school they do the O3 pinning ceremony for all of the HPSP students right after graduation. Is this what you're talking about? If it is, you could talk to your AMSUS/AMOPS chapter and ask if, for those who have to go to ODS, you couldn't arrange something before you ship out. Have a pinning ceremony just for you with your military peeps, pin your O3, and take your diploma off to ODS.

You will have a pinning ceremony every time you make rank, so this isn't your last chance. I understand wanting to do something with your friends who have gone through this with you, but it doesn't make sense to start off your career in the hole just for that.

On a side note, I worked a job during undergrad where we all started training the same day. A girl showed up like 3 weeks late because she was Miss Rodeo Wyoming or something and had a pageant. The other people at the job took it as a personal offense and made her miserable all year. She ended up quitting. Now, not that doctors are that petty, but if you show up a month into the show, you could face some blowback from your peers who are pissed that they've been slogging away for a month already and you just showed up. The noobiest of the noobs, as it were.

Anyway, good luck.

How do you know that internship starts on June 6th already?

Also, why in the world does it start so soon before July 1?

Do you get vacation during your fourth year? At my school, we get considerable vacation - most use it for interviews - but you are going military, so you won't need to if you only rank military bases etc. You'll match in December etc.

So why can't you take your vacation and go to training then? Then you don't have to miss graduation or all the ceremonies that go with it? You won't get to take a family trip or relax with time off, but hey - it's better than missing out on graduation!

Is this something you've thought about?

Well I am a peds intern (second year in 18 days) in a Navy peds program and i haven't done ODS either. I am going straight through. Not sure what the real concern is here. If you are chosen to go straight through you can do it either right after intern graduation or after residency graduation. I am doing it after I finish in 2012. My program director gave me the option and this one works for me. It won't affect you being chosen in whichever program you want but eventually it might delay you from going to another duty station.

Agree with Gastrapathy. Use the ADT, knock out ODS ASAP.
You will be better off in the long run.

Are you doing military or civilian residency? I don't think you can start internship without going through ODS?

I only have 4 wks of vacation in my 4th year so I need an extra wk if I want to do ODS. In that case, I need to con't rotation after graduation to finish my school requirement. In that case, I will not allow to attend the 03 pinning (not really a problem but it would be nice though), won't get my diploma on graduation day ( not a problem either), won't have any vacation for 2 years straight, won't have time to pack and move since internship starts right after that. Will I that be too much to handle? I heard internship is not easy.

I understand how my colleagues would feel if I come in late and keep asking for help. I have to reconsider this. I just want to know if this would be a disadvantage for me in everything later.

HSCP students in your same class are forced to due ODS AFTER they graduate from medical school. So if you can't fit it in prior to graduation, you won't be alone in showing up late to intern year, if that eases any feelings.

I just recently this in a previous thread, but this one seems more relevant/recent:

I'm HSCP and I just discovered that I wouldn't be able to go to ODS until after graduation (it seems that with a new program, not many recruiters/program directors/etc know much about these things). When do most residency programs start and how much trouble does it cause to show up late? I was given the impression that trying to fit ODS in between graduation and the start of internship was looked on poorly by residency directors, but it seems that's our only option...

PDs will have to live with you being late. Internship starts on 1 July.

Does anyone know if it would be possible to complete ODS without it counting as AT? I'm starting MS4 and I'm doing both of my upcoming ATs as Navy rotations, but I have a vacation month that I can take off and I've looked at the schedule and could possibly fit ODS in before graduation if I play my cards right. I know if it's not AT I'll have to pay for everything, but I'm just wondering if anyone knows if this would even be an option. Thanks.

Can you just make one of your rotations civilian so you can attend ODS?
