hey everyone, MS-3 newbie here.

Just wondering if anyone here has an opinion on this. I was thinking of doing a 2 weeker at my school (that has no residency program) to get my feet wet, and 2 others at my top 2 choices (UIC and Resurrection) and mabey another one at UIC in Toxicology. Would EM PDs look down upon this with toxo being an EM related rotation? A big plus here is that the director of the toxo rotation is also the PD at one of my top choices but I'm worried about the fact that some programs might look down upon the fact that a number of my electives have been in EM or EM related.

thanks all! 👍

why do you think they would look down on you taking EM and Tox rotations? 😕

Nobody is going to look at you funny for doing a tox rotation in addition to 2 EM rotations. Most likely, it would reflect favorably on you (assuming you didn't flunk the rotation).

agreed. i felt that doing more em rotations would be helpful and show your interest in the field. i did 3 em rotations and an em ultrasound elective. no regrets.

I have the same question because some M4s and some posters on this message board have mentioned that doing more than 2 EM rotations is overboard and that PDs would like you to take part in other rotations to demonstrate that you're a well rounded student.

I think that is true that more than two EM rotations is overkill and could be seen as "trying to do your residency in the fourth year". But if you did an ultrasound rotation, a toxicology rotation, or a crisis psych rotation, I doubt these would be seen in that light. Each of these has "cross-over" with other disciplines and the faculty are not generally all EM trained (but the head of the rotation at UIC is also the PD of the EM residency 👍 ).

i think either way, you will gain a lot. if u do other rotations, then you will get useful experiences since EM encompasses just about everything (except breast imaging). i think that doing lots of EM rotations was great b/c that's where I love to be (can't wait for this intern year to be over so that I can stop being the "off service intern" and return to the ED). In college, people said to major in non-science fields in order to be well rounded but I enjoyed biochem, histo, micro, and other medicine related classes and it was helpful for med school also. in the same way, i enjoyed doing EM and EM related rotations and learned plenty. I guess each person has his/her own preference, but if you want to do lots of EM rotations, go for it. If you want to do other rotations, that will give you great experiences also.
