Hey I was just wondering how many letters of rec you fourth years currently in the match submitted. I am on my surg clerkship right now and want to get a little heads up before next year.

The most you can send to any one program is Four per ERAS. Most places ask for three letters on their web pages. In general everyone sends one from the Surgery Chairman of your department. You will definitely want at least one other surgeon to write a letter. For the third or fourth you could either do another surgeon or someone who knows you well in another field (cardiology etc.)

I sent 4. Definitely try to get one from your chair. My chairman said he couldn't care less about letters from non-surgeons... usually wouldn't even read 'em. So, I got 4 from 4 surgeons...

But, needless to say, 3 really good letters are much better than 3 really good letters and one equivocal one... so be careful.
